|
|
| I have a 2000 supreme with a tandem trailer with drum brakes. When i go to stop they will lock up all the time. They dont lock up continuously though, it will go skid skid skid on and off until it is completely stopped. Anyone know what could cause this or where to start looking? |

Sounds like the the shoes are sticking. Drum brakes require a lot of maintenance. Probably should take the drums off and make sure everything moves freely.

| i think you should take in the trailer where you bought the boat and have the people there look at the trailer. |

somethings to check.
cehck the settings on your brake controller in the truck as it seems liek it may be set high, or is not corresponding to what the specs are from your pedal output to the psi to the brakes...
since the trailer is about 7 years......you might want to cehck to see if anyone has monkeyed with the shoe adjusters in the drum. (the little starwheel adjuster). what im thinking is that maybe the drum has uneven wear and or is warped, aand with an excess setting (meaning to much shoe contact to qucikly) and a warped drum, you could have that scenario.
It would be like when you get a brake pulse in your truck, when you feel the pedal vibrating under stopping conditions, first thing to look at is a waped rotor or drum.
check thsoe out......have the brakes been replaced recently at all? |

A few things I would also consider (I'm assuming you have hydraulic surge brakes on this thing rather than electric):
1. Check the brake fluid level and bleed each brake assembly. Sometimes air in your brake lines can make this problem you're having occur.
2. Do you have the electric signal for the backup solenoid? I've seen the sending unit or solenoid for this go bad and start engaging the brake randomly due to a short or a failing unit. If you have a manual lockout for backing up, engage it and drive that way VERY BRIEFLY (and with someone following you that will pay close attention and be your brake lights while you're doing this) and see if that clears up the problem.
Good luck. Give us more info if you can, since I'm just guessing at your setup. _________________

Electric Drum? For boats, I've seen electric controlled brakes in the truck but there is an actuator near the tongue of the trailer, so no electric back at the wheels.
What size Nautiques were those, and what brand trailers?
Since they are skidding on/off all the way through the stop if the controller was set high it'd be skidding the whole way to a stop.
Something is sticking. _________________

yeah thats what im talkin about...the converter at the tongue.
they werent nautique trailers, they were sperate companies..one was a shorlander, and i the other one was some random company...
if somethin was sticking, wouldnt it skid all the way through the skid? you are quite possibly right tho, i do agree, jsut tthinkin that the drum could be warped and there could be an issue with the shoes.
i dunno..jsut tossin it out there |

yeah thats what im talkin about...the converter at the tongue. its not a completely electric system, since the trailer goes underwater it would be useless. but thats what im alkin about...dont know the official name for the system
