WTF lunch experience

Here's a new one. I'm closing up my office on Monday, so the rest of the people in my office building decided it would be nice to go out to lunch before I leave, and to celebrate the holidays. Coolness. Sounds good. We go for sushi...even better. So here's the weird part. There's 5 of us there. A guy with his assistant, me, and the office manager with her friend who has never had sushi. Check comes. Office manager decides she wants to pay for her friend. Cool. Chiropractor decides he wants to pay for his assistant. Cool. So the divide the check up 3 ways and I basically get f*cked into paying for half of each of their meals. I mean...c'mon. I'm not trying to be a cheap bastard even though I'm broke...but wtf? First off I was under the impression that they were taking ME out. Okay, no big deal. But then I get duped into paying for their crap too. That just blows. So instead of paying roughly $20 for lunch, I got stuck with almost $40.
Of course I didn't say anything because I didn't want to seem like a d*ckhead, cheap a*shole...but that's just dumb.

Learn some math. You jerkheads!

Did you eat more sushi than each of them? Sushi is tough because its communal food as opposed to each ordering a seperate meal.

That is the exact time to be a dick and call the real cheap pricks out....when everyone is their looking at the bill with 5 people at the table and wanting to split it 3 ways even an office manager can do that simple math.

I had a buddy who would do this to me all the time - order mad drinks and extra everything (cuz I always drive) and then think we would just split the bill 50/50. I itemized the bill for him one time (he's slow with math) and he just looked at me in shock I told him I would even cover his half of the tip. He was embarrassed as all hell when the girl he was with had to hand him a $40 spot to help cover their portion of the bill.

I had a similar deal, me and a single buddy went to a bike rally in Galveston with our other friend who brought his wife. Then they (the couple) are ready to split our room at the Hilton 3 ways. I don't mind someone bringin their old lady, but 4 peeps is 4 peeps. Short version is I antied up 1/4 of the bill and said take it or leave it.

I have a friend that I used to eat lunch with about once a week when I was in college. We would take turns picking up the check. After a while I started to notice that he would order water and a cheap meal if it was his turn to pay and he would order a drink and a more expensive meal if it was my turn to pay. I guess it didn't really effect me because I ordered the same thing whether I was paying or not, but I just thought it was cheap of him. Especially since it probably made a difference of $7 in his weekly budget.

kmagnuss, that doesn't really sound like that great of a going away lunch to me. The only way that I can think of this being ok would be if the group goes out for lunch on a regular basis and it's assumed people pay in this manner. Still sucks since they stick you with twice what every other individual pays.

If this was a one off thing... I would assume that either the party who initially suggested the lunch was responsible for the entire bill, or the two of them should have split the bill and said, "It's our treat, best of luck on your move and new opportunities ...."

Not sure what I would have done in that situation though. Not sure how to tell them that they are being jerks without looking either cheap or like an door knob.
