well first off....this should be in the boat forum
and secondly vdrive is usually prefered as it moves the engine's weight back, but if you'll be skiing off of your boat, ddrive is nice too. |

| does it really matter what forum its in? its general stuff... yea direct is like an i/o with the motor comming off the back, v drive is what is on mastercrafts, malibu etc. where the shaft comes out of the bottom of the boat with the prop on it |

| The way to tell is an inboard has a fixed prop and a rudder to steer, and an I/O has a trim setting and the prop itself turns to steer the boat. |

Both V & D drives have props coming out the bottom of the boat, not like a I/O which has the drive off the back.
The D drive has the motor in the middle and the shaft points backwards and downward through the bottom of the boat.
The V drive has the motor in the back of the boat and the shaft points forward into the middle of the boat then goes through the "V-drive" and goes backward and down through the middle of the boat giving the "V" to v-drive. _________________ Niiiiiiiiice

D drive.... traditional ski boat with the engine box in the middle. Beniefiets of this set up would have to be handling more then anything. For wakeboarding a D drive can be good, but you will have to add weight. Socializing wise, the engine box can get in the way, overal the engine gets in the way of alot of things
Vdrive.... newer design of inboard. Like has already been mention the engine sits in the back, however the prop and everythign is still under the boat like a D drive. The transmission is set up in a V form so that the transmission is more towards the bow, and then the shaft shots down from that. From a wakeboarding standpoint, these are perfered by most riders becuase the engine is in the back, bringing more wieght back there. Generaly they will have a bigger wake. handleing isnt as good as a D drive, but it still handles better then any inboard/outboard or outboard boat you can find. Vdrives also tend to give you a more roomie feel.

Velvet Drive is a brand of marine transmission used in V-drives, and D-drives.
Also the tranny acts as a tranny and transfer case, well I guess it is just basically a transfer case, because it is a 1:1 output and just redirects the power to the rear, much like a transfer case you will find in 4X4's. _________________ 04 LF Trip 133
