How much did do it yourself speaker systems cost for you guys to put together? Also, what exactly do you need? As in do your speakers need to be waterproof?

Just finished my DIY speaker pods. I spent probably $150. total. Cound have spent less, but overall, I like mine.
What you need:
PVC pipe cut to disired length
speakers (mine are not waterproof, but the are some cheappies that I found on EBay for like $18.
1/2 to 3/4 inch MDF
I used bondo to seal the back end together and some more to build up around the speaker grills to prevent any sharp edges.
primer and paint.
wire to run in the tower.
amp (I already had one so I came out really cheep on that end)

does the pvc look nice painted...i'd like to see pics of em if you got them. Also, where did you put your amp and did you make clamps for the speakers as well or buy them?

You could probably just "waterproof" them yourself. Just use a lightweight glue to seal up anywhere leading into the speaker and around the tweeter wires. At least that was the only difference I could see on my marine ready Kickers vs. car speakers.

I used some 2" U-Bolts and they fit around the tower perfectly. PVC looks pretty when painted right (LOTS of coats). Just don't use that fake chrome stuff. It looks terrible.

I made these for about $75 ($200 for the speakers)

The paint looks pretty good in this picture but it actually looks like crap. They're also PVC by the way.

Just as an FYI there are inexpensive alternatives out there now. I'm in to these a total of $170 w/ shipping. The cans are from DYI Wake and were $113. The speakers are Rockford Powers from eBay for $45.

CrazyRazzman, thanks for showing me the other alternatives, although i would like to try to do the cans myself just becuz i enjoy doing that type of thing and i wanted to make some very unique looking speaker canisters

Cool! There ain't nuthin' wrong with making stuff yourself, it's actuall quite gratifying to do stuff yourself.

diyguy where did you get the lights and how did you construct the bar? You seriously only paid 300 for all that?
