I have wakeboarded for 5 or so years but this is the first year I have really gotten serious and wanted to progress. I rode on a board that was 10 years old and had the sandle bindings, no ankle support or anything! I currently have a Hyperlite Premiere with Hyperlite ERA bindings.

What is easier? Backroll or Tandrum? I have tried several backrolls.. Just trying to get the feel for them, I have not kept the handle in my hand yet after hitting the wake, I guess that is the first thing I need to do differently.

I read over alot of advice for doing backrolls but if you guys have any more input thats cool to. Here is a video of me trying a backroll.

I think you threw that trick before you even hit the wake. You definately need to hold your edge longer (all the way up the wake). Edge up the wake harder and you'll get the pop you need to get around. It's also going to help you clear the other wake. Rotation looks o.k. but you'll never get around until you hold that edge longer.

Don't cut out as far. Edge progressively. You need to be edging much harder at the wake. This is a load and release trick. You had no load and therefore nothing to release.

Awsome, thanks for the tips. As for the Tandrum..? is that harder to learn than a backroll or is it kind of a toss up depending on how you ride?

Seems most people have more success with the backroll. I had better luck with the tanTrum. Just depends on what you're more comfortable with. I'm more comfortable doing backflips so the tantrum and toe-side backroll are more comfortable for me than a heelside backroll.

Backroll is easier as there is really nothing to actually throwing the trick. It will also help get you used to keeping your eyes open and spotting your landing.

Tantrums are almost as easy, but I would suggest getting your BRs down first just to get used to being upside down.

Then what? Doesn't take too long to land a tantrum a certain way but there are tantrums and there are TANTRUMS! It's easy to do a quick low back-flip. After getting fairly consistant at those and watching them on video I realized they sucked even though I was riding away from them. Started focusing on taking them into the flats and am finding them much more difficult to ride away from.

no i knew from my first try the difference between a laid out tantrum o a tucked tantrum depending on style and just a "quick" backflip. Its weird that people cant post sh*t on this site anymore without other people getting in their faces.... Rolling Eyes

I wasn't getting in your face I was just curious if you ran into the same situation I did where you could land them after a few tries but struggled when trying to go bigger. It's weird that people are so sensitive these days Rolling Eyes

Tantrums are much easier to learn IMO. I taught my friends by making them get on a wakeskate and ride into the wake and huck a backflip while letting go of the handle with their back hand. Knowing that you are going to crash and that there's not a board on your feet seems to allow people to concentrate on the rotation. After a few attempts, must people will get the hang of letting the rope pull them all the way around. Once I see the rotation, I get the person to put a board on and try a few. Usually, I have had good success teaching tantrums that way.

Definately. Learning on a tramp is a nice luxury to get you used to being upside down/spotting your landing etc., however, it doesn't do a very good job of mimicing the pull of the boat so even if you get something dialed on a tramp, it's still going to take some work behind the boat. I agree with 02 lightning in that it's much easier once you simply fall a few times and realize it's not usually going to hurt and once you get past that you can focus on doing the trick the right way and at that point it's much easier to learn the trick. I didn't do it with a wakeskate but simply slowed the boat down to 18mph and went in and hucked it without the handle.

Cool, "02lightning"; I like your idea with the wakeskate!

02lightning, were they wearing helmets? You'd think with a projectile such as a wakeskate, someone's melon would probably hit it.
