What did it feel like? Not when it actually happened, but after the fact maybe a week or 2 later, the next time you rode, walking around, etc. I have heard both that it can be really painful at the time or not real bad at all and you dont even know your wrecked something.

reason i ask is about 2.5 weeks ago i went up to my buddies house at tulloch and rode, basically the first time for the season since we've been away at school, and didnt have my bindings set to great for some reason. Also being the first time behind a real boat in awhile (im on the waterski team and we have a very unweighted 197) and being pretty rusty and out of shape, i landed hard on top of the wake a few times and was real sore the next day, no spills though.

few days later though, my left (back) knee started to feel kinda weird. not painful or stiff, but just weird, kind of loose feeling i guess. i was walking a little funny and felt like i was kind of unsteady on that knee. wasn't swollen up or anything and like i said no pain, and that lasted probably 8-10 days just feeling kinda tweaked so i figured im probably just out of shape. Rode again up at tulloch this last weekend, 1 set on the regular board and one on the roam and 2 sets surfing (major workout keeping up with the wake we had) and again, no real pain or anything in my knee but it just feels weird. now 3 days later, the front of my shin has had a fast, mild pain once or twice that has come and gone, and the back inside of my knee feels kind tweaked. when i lock my knee out straight it feels really "weird", not painful but just weird, like if i wanted to i could hyperextend it i guess.

ive never had knee problems (played soccer for 15 years) but i was real out of practice/shape for the season so im guessing i just tweaked it a bit, but i am planning to get it checked out when i get home next week to make sure i didnt tear anything.

im just wondering how it felt for everyone else, i know lots of people that have gone 10 years without an ACL/MCL/etc before they had any kind of surgery. probably just pysching myself out but id really care not to ruin my summer by being stupid about it.

I partially tore my PCL and MCL wakeboarding and I knew it right away. Your knee feels very unstable. Mine did not hurt too much and it didn't swell up too much but I could tell something was wrong. I would go to the doctor and see if you can get a MRI. It is really the only way to be sure.

I knew I blew mine out when the black fog and stars went away. I snowboarded the rest of the day and a few more times as well as wakeboarded a number of times. Wakeboarding was tough because each time I landed in the flats, all the strength in my knee would go out. Finally I went to a doctor and found out my ACL was completely gone along with the PCL and MCL. You should see a doctor (Preferably a sports medicine specialist) soon. The sooner you get it fixed the sooner you can ride.

I dislocated my kneecap a while ago... I defenintly felt it coming on but ignored it. Ive had bone bruses in my knee and muscle/tendon problems since. Beware of the warning signs. I would see a doctor ASAP.

Torn meniscus > stiff, painful, swollen, popping from time to time.

What? Are you a superhero or something? You continued to snowboard and wakeboard, then found out that you blew out 3 of your 4 knee ligaments?
I call BS on this story.

It's not that uncommon. When you tear your ACL you can't "tear it again" so you really can't hurt it worse. Just makes it really unstable and difficult to do certain things (wakeboard, snowboard, play basketball etc..) It's not even that painful, your knee just gives out all the time. I've actually heard of lots of people doing this. Including a friend who continued to snowboard an entire season with a torn ACL (although he wore a brace) and his doctor even told him he could (didn't recommend it) but basically said "you're not going to make it worse, it's already torn"

When I did my ACL I also had some good muslce damage, I did a good number on my knee, however it was diagnosed as a severe sprain. So after 6 weeks, 2 on crutches, 4 in an imobilizer I started wakeskating, at 8 weeks I was wakeboarding again. My knee didn't feel quite right but a sever sprain can have effects for awhile too, so with some serious stretching and making sure to take things only w2w I kept riding and progressing, in the winter trying to strengthen the knee I had problems with tracking and it wanting to give out so I had it reassed, torn miniscus they thought, so an MRI and wakeboarding on it later, nope it was torn.

Yooper, Suck a fart out of my ass. In fact, go PM Chavez, NorCal, Oshensurfer, Bethany, ScottA, et al. They were all there when I blew it out and I rode with them many times before having my surgery. Shut your piehole when you don't know what the F you're talking about.

Ok, I just got done PMing all of them, and they confirmed that you are indeed full of s#!t.

I gotta give you credit though... that "suck a fart out of my ass" was a good one. That really brought back memories of 4th grade. Thanks, man!

In all seriousness, I have had 2 knee surgeries myself, I work for an orthopedic manufacturing company as a sales trainer, and I have been IN the O.R. during HUNDREDS of surgeries. I actually teach surgeons how to use our devices. To say that I "don't know what the F I'm talking about" would be inaccurate. If you had complete ruptures of your ACL, PCL and MCL and could still wakeboard then you actually are a superhero, and probably not human. Thanks for the response, though.

Correct. SOME people can still get by without an ACL. Actually, anyone can "get by" without one, but only some people can actually be athletic without one. It depends on your individual anatomy. If it is an isolated tear of only the ACL, it is definitely possible.

True, you won't make it worse, but if you crash again, your knee is much more susceptible to (usually) an MCL or medial meniscus injury.

Yooper, Congrats on having a job in which you can make money and not know anything about it. How about I send you my MRIs along with testimonials from real people. I am not trying to prop myself up but when someone calls me out for lying, I get a little upset. So I stick to my last statement.....

I wouldn't say I know nothing about my job. If your story went down exactly the way you are describing, you are either a superhero, an alien or are one of .000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of people who could actually participate in an athletic activity with ONE FREAKIN' LIGAMENT holding your knee together. In fact, I would go so far as to say you may be the only person ever.

Actually, I am.... Rolling Eyes I thought it over, and it does seem totally plausible. You hear of that kind of thing a lot. Your skin can provide quite a bit of support to your knee joint.
