I currently ride both a 2003 Premier 135 and 140 but I'm thinking its time to upgrade. Have the Premier boards changed that much over the years or should I just wait till the end of the season and get a good deal on a 2007 Ronix one?
Also, what's the deal with the DNA versions of the board?? |

The '03 premier shape was renamed the Era in 2005ish I believe. If you're looking to stay on that same shape then I'd pick up that board. The only difference is that the "step down" rail has become a "fret rail" which wont really affect the ride at all (you won't notice any difference) and also that the molded in fins turn into a little lip that runs the length of the board for a bit of added stability.
The current model of the Premier is a whole new shape and ride. And the DNA doesn't exist. Hyperlite has since gone to an updated version of their Biolite core which has worked pretty well for them. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

Hyperlaite says all kinds of crap about how the "step down rails" and "Fret rails" make the board ride different, but I don't see how, cause when you edge the water doesn't even pass over that part of the board...can anyone explain, or is it just brochure BS to make the product pitch sound better? _________________

The thinner the rail, the more it is allowed the possibility to knife into/through the water. The Witness and several Ronix boards work in the opposite way with a vertical sidewall that makes the board ride higher in the water for more speed.
I THINK the Bad Ass shape that HL ummm..."borrowed" to create the Premier with already had the same "step down" rail integrated into the shape. Anyone know for sure? _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

scott a, All that really is is the angle of the rail/sidewall... An I correct in thinking that a step down or frets really has no effect? _________________

The thinner the rail is, the easier it is for water to flow over it. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

The DNA core is a lighter core than the biolite, which of course makes the whole board lighter. That is the only difference. I cant tell you exactly how much lighter it is, but I would guess about a pound or 2.
I also have 2 premier boards... 2002 premier 135 and 140. As mentioned before the board hasnt changed over the years so I would stay with what you have. There really hasnt been any MAJOR changes in board design in the past 8 to 10 years or so...
I personally dont think that the board really makes that much of a difference in your riding. The thing that makes the biggest difference is your form and technique. If you give any one of the pros and board from 10 years ago I feel sure that they would still be able to go out and do all the same tricks that they can do today. Why??...because they have good technique. For example, Darin Shipiro was throwing s-bends, mobes, 7s, 9s....for the past 15+ years. And when he started doing some of those tricks the boards were only unidirectional. Moreover, he was doing that behind unweighted slalom skiing boats.
Dont get caught up in too much of the hype about the new boards they will ride pretty similar to the board you have now. |
