I thought it was the small wake because I wasn't getting that much air but a friend came out today and I was like holy sh*t. I couldn't believe it. I just can't get that kind of pop. How do you guys do it?

1. progressive edge thru the wake.

2. 'legs stiff' or 'straight' or 'stand tall' or 'whatever you call it' so you do not absorb the impact of the wake.

There is a few things beyond that that can help....

1) bigger wake.
2) correct boat speed so you get your best edge.
3) double up
4) jumping off wake tip

.... but these are not required.

3. Practice, practice, practice.

adam355, When I first started wakeboarding, I could barely get 6 inches of air. I can now consistently clear the wake at 70'. The fact that I'm out there 2-4 days a week is the main reason why. Hang in there. Watch some instructional videos, get some coaching, and keep on practicing. It will come. Cool

Here's a short vid of me going W2W. It is definitely not perfect form as you can see me flatten out somewhat right before I hit the wake. I still maintained enough edge and enough tension to easily clear the wake though. Also, you can see my wake is far from massive.

You can crouch as you are coming up to the wake, but as you hit it you need to be extending your legs, in order to not absorb the impact.

BUT you do not need to. I can easily go W2W with my legs locked straight. This guarantees that you get 100% of the force of the wake pushing you upward, but is incredibly awkward, hard on the knees, and not recommended.

The important thing is that when you are on a proper edge, the pressure on your legs will be huge. Add to that the impact of the wake and you have a lot of pressure. If you legs are bent, it will be difficult to not have you knees shoot up and absorb the wake.

It has been used 1000 times here, but I know no better example than that of the olympic mogal skier. Watch the knees violently piston in and out and the skier stays in contact with the snow. This is the exact opposite of what you are trying to accomplish.

As you progress, you will need the seated position for doing some larger load-and-release tricks, like a raley, but to learn a good w2w technique it is not required.

Practice building line tension as you come into the wake, and DON'T LET UP at the base of the wake. One thing that really screws you up is taking a hard edge right off the bat, because you'll have to let up to avoid hitting the wake too fast. you wanna progressively build line tension as you come at the wake, then stand tall off the top of it.

It's not the line tension that gives you lift, but the line tension is a side effect of the pressure on the bottom of your board, which is where your lift comes from. The more pressure your board is putting on the water, the more pressure the water is pushing back on it. So when you release off the wake with a lot of pressure under your board, you're gonna be able to go much higher than if you don't have a solid progressive edge

I have also found to make sure you kind of try to push your chest to the sky...Or roll your shoulders back... I have been getting great pop after someone pointed that out to me... maybe it is just a coincidence!

When i first started jumping i was literally trying to jump at the top of the wake which didnt do anything. I was then told that you want to almost pretend you are squatting, you are pushing up as hard as you can but you arent trying to jump and get off the ground.

Its your timing and form. Gradualy increase the pressure on your edge and then stand up tall at the wake. The more you practice the more comfortable you will be.
