|
|
Some of you may remember the Sacred Heart Soup diet that was posted here a while back. I've been making it once a month or so since then and modifying it to make it better. Here's the final result:
2 cups red beans (dry)
I used the dry beans (as opposed to canned) and soaked them overnight, then cooked them in the morning. Threw in a fingerful of diced garlic and a squeeze of honey (what do I know? I was just experimenting). I thought I cooked them too long (just over 1.5 hours), but they turned out pretty good. I'll pay a bit more attention next time and try to get them a bit more firm. These can cook while you cut (and cut and cut) the rest of the ingredients.
1 bunch green onions
1 medium white onion
4 Jalepenos (2 w/o seeds)
3 bulbs garlic
1 bunch parsley
1 bunch cilantro
1 TBSP sea salt
1 TBSP ground pepper
1/2 cup Worcestershire
I cut the onions up into about as small as one can dice them (simply slice the green ones). The garlic and japs I used a food processor (a cheap late night mail order one) and it kind of turned both into mush, which I actually didn't mind - still tastes the same. I put a bit of olive oil in the bottom of the pot and put all the above in at once. Trying to brown up the onions a bit and it just starts all the seasonings at once.
1 bunch of celery
1.5 lbs fresh green beans
2 lbs. carrots
3 green peppers
Again, dice or slice into pretty tiny pieces. The first time I made this stuff I didn't cut small enough and there's too many different ingredients for you to get enough in a bite. After the onions have browned a bit, I add the carrots first, let them soften a bit and then add the rest - green beens last. I have no idea if this serves the purpose I think it does, but it works for me.
2 large can/boxes of chicken broth (no fat) (32oz ea)
4 cans tomato paste (6oz ea)
Add the broth. Add the paste, stir it all up to smooth out the paste a bit.
2 large cans of diced tomatoes (28oz ea)
3 grilled chicken breasts
Add the tomatoes, then the chicken breasts, then the red beans (drained).
I let it simmer for an hour or so, take it off the heat and let it cool for a bit and then use a bowl to scoop it all into my containers.
I eat a bowl of this a day as part of a change in eating habits (5 small meals a day, roughly 3 hours apart). I really like the fact that it's healthy as all get out. Only downer is it does take forever to prep and make.
I also measured pretty specifically so I could get an idea of the nutritional value.
Here's what I came up w/ per bowl:
234 calories
38 grams of carbs
24 grams of protein
0 grams of fat (3 grams of fat total, so about 0.2 g fat/bowl) |

Very little - why? Where do you see any sodium outside of the TBSP I added? |

jt09, chicken broth has tons of it.
Tomato paste may have a bunch as well.
There are low or no sodium chicken broth alternatives, but I wonder what that will do for taste.... _________________

The only thing I couldn't take with the original soup was the insane level of celery and carrots.
Try it with a half of a habanero. The hab adds an awesome flavor to the soup.

the low sodium chicken broth tastes fine, it wont affect the flavor....use low sodium worstershire (sp?) sauce too, and please what ever you do, brush your teeth and chew some gum after eating that soup, that much garlic will give you some bad breath!!! |

chavez, 1320mg of sodium. Or less than 100mg / bowl. Is that a lot? I drink an assload of water and am working out daily, so I'm not too worried.
haugy, the addition of the beans, chicken and tomato paste have really made this soup REALLY good.
mbuck, already have 4 japs. Plenty hot, thankyouverymuch!
atx_wakegirl_amy, I loves me some garlic, but remember how BIG of a resipe this is - it makes 15 bowls.
I will look for the low sodium stuff next time. No reason it can't get even healthier. |

It's pretty damn big and now that I have added the beans and chicken it is only an inch or so from the top. |

I had my own variation where I got lazy in some parts and stopped using stuff that took so long to cut up. I started using the precut carrots too. I actually had to use 2 of the largest pots we have to make the stuff. I like noodles so I used double the Lipton soup mix and shredded some cooked chicken to add more meat. I was making it once or twice a month but I have since stopped. It was getting to the point where I could only eat 2-3 meals out of it before I got sick of it. It is also pretty expensive if you calculate the cost per meal. I ended up having to eat 3-4 bowls of it to make a meal which left me hungry and prompted me to eat fast food. Eating such quantity it only lasted 3-4 meals for a couple hours of preparation and it just wasn't worth it.
FYI, the diet is also not from the sacred heart

Only if I ever get to the point of severe poverty could I live on a diet as this. I'm not into eating the samething 2 days in a row. I never had to eat leftovers as a child. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

Dragonlady8, I've been living off the same 10 things or so for the last 3 months. It's helped me drop around 20lbs and I look like I did in *that* picture again. That was a LONG time ago for me. |

jt09, what 10 things have you been living off to lose some weight? I need to drop about 10 pounds and I've slowly been trying to change my eating habits. I've almost completely cut out fast food (once a month tops now), and try to eat healthier in general, but theres always room for improvment. _________________

edrex, from the "weight loss results thread":
jt09 wrote: | I've lost 20 lbs and 8% BF since Jan 1. I was 220+ and 23% BF then and am 200+/+ 1lb and 15-16%BF now
Stopped drinking for the first month, drank once or twice a week till a week or so ago, back dry again. This is HUGE.
Eating 5 small meals a day:
6 scrambled egg whites or 1 cup oatmeal for breakfast
protein shake as a replacement meal - I use a 4:1 mix of Syntha-6 and Muscle Milk (strawberry) w/ 4 or 5 strawberries and a small handful of raspberries, ice and water.
Any of the following the rest of the time:
apple
can of tuna fish
couple of slices roast beef & buffalo mozzarella
1/2 lb edemame
1/2 lb chopped spinach (frozen) w/ lemon
rice and beans
spinach salad w/ buffalo mozz & tomato
grilled chicken breast
large head broccoli
bowl of the Sacred Heart veggie soup (modified)
Sometimes I'll treat myself to a steak or butterfly pork loin (grilling a fat ribeye right now).
Been going to the gym at least 3-4 times a week (usually 4).
Been riding my mountain bike around the 10 mile hike and bike trail around Town Lake in downtown Austin at least once a week. Lately I've really ramped this up as I am training for a 45 mile ride through the Texas hill country in a month or so. I did 50 miles last week - 20 on M, 20 on TH, 10 on Sun before work.
I look better than I have in YEARS and feel like a damn champ. Thanks for asking!
**If you are drinking protein shakes as replacement meals, do your homework and look at the nutritional values. Some of those high protein mixes have a lot of fat. Muscle Milk does, which is why I only use a little of it (it tastes way better than the Syntha-6, but it only takes a little to notice) |

Thanks man. Those are good ideas for smaller meals. I want to do the snacking thing too, but I find I end up going til 1-2pm before eating so I'll have a meal then, then a small snack later and a small dinner. _________________

edrex, you have to force yourself to eat right when you get up. It was hard for me because I used to do the same thing as you - eat my first meal at lunchtime at the earliest.
Once you do it for a couple of days, it's easy. By eating small, you get hungry more often. You have to plan a bit more if you are working a 9-5 by making meals and taking them to work, but it's nothing hard.
There's a TON more that you can eat, I just choose not too. Almonds, beef jerky, protein bars, ostrich jerky (really good). |

Yeah, I'll have to work on that. I don't tend to keep a lot of food on hand at home. But getting in the habit of oatmeal for breakfast shouldn't be too hard (breaking the habit of adding butter and brown sugar might be tough though!). _________________

There's a new version of Quaker oatmeal out that is a "quick cook." 1C boiling water, 1/2C oatmeal, 1 or 2 minutes later - done. Make sure you add a pinch of salt - it makes a WORLD of difference.
Agree on the brown sugar and butter - I grew up on the instant stuff and LOVE that mapls and brown sugar kind!
For the egg whites, I add a bit of garlic and some S&P. My palate has gone quite bland and boring these days, but now that I see the results, I am quite OK with that!
Oh yeah....biggest thing is cutting out alcohol. I went 100% sober for a month and now only drink MAYBE once a week. That's just pure sugar you are putting in you. It's made a HUGE difference. |

If you want to try something different for the egg whites, try the egg beaters southwestern kind. I never thought I would try them, but I read in some magazine that they are good if you are in a migas type mood. They have like 60 cals for half of a cup and they fill you up and keep you full for awhile.
You can also add spinach and other vegetables to regular egg whites and it makes it less boring.
Low sodium turkey bacon is also supposed to be good....have "steel cut" oatmeal without sugar and like 2 slices of turkey bacon...the bacon has like 15 to 20 cals a strip but like 7 grams of protein, so not to bad |

jt09, Funny you brought this back up. 2 weeks ago I did the diet. Lost about 7 pounds. I've since sabotaged myself, but I came up with a version that stuck more with the diet recipe but tastes much better.
Here is the original and what I added.
http://www.idiet4u.com/diets/sacredheart.html
Added more green beans, added some chopped garlic, about a ½ a container of Pace Picante, a jalapeno, I also have made it with all broth and ½ broth/1/2 water. It was good either way. Probably better with the water.
Only problem with the diet is you do feel hungry quite a bit, but with the fruits, you can keep that at bay except for one day. _________________ (insert funny chit here) |

atx_wakegirl_amy, I never worry about calories, I worry about carbs and fat. That steel cut oatmeal is a pain in the arse to make IMO.
oshensurfer, gotta make the commitment bud! It's hard not eating my comfort foods - I LOVE pasta and sandwiches. But I'm down to 196 and I'd guess somewhere around 14%BF, so it's totally worth it to me. |

Everything has calories - it's where they come from that matters - calories are just a measure of the "energy" in the food. I want my calories to come from protein, not carbs, fat, sugar, etc. |
