I think you can set up "portfolios" in yahoo or google finance for free. In fact I think most of the sites like that allow you to track your stock picks.

You could start with google. Wink

Each of the main stock news sites usually has tutorials and educational sections.

thestreet.com has alot of free info. I'm sure some of the guys like Chavez can recommend others that are better too.

smwilliam2, Morningstar for research.

Use whatever stock tracker floats your boat. Most of the sites draw in research data from Morningstar anyhow.

I use etrade for standard trading, but I don't do it much anymore. It's a PITA and eff's up my taxes and gives me a headache. I try to buy and sell funds now instead of individual stocks, unless its a private pre-IPO deal. I have also used sharebuilder in the past until they screwed me on fees so I've been slowly selling all my stock in that account. Transeferring with them is a pain also and requires paper and weeks for the transaction to go through. Plus, they don't offer all listed stock.

They are all (online brokerages) essentially the same when it comes to buy/selling. They are different when it comes to analytical research and extras they provide and that is a personal thing. Some people like every nitpicking detail. I don't, but I like more than the average joe probably. I utilize friends in the business for the hard questions and that I trust to look out for my best interests.
