As a parent, I know that no matter what board you get, he's going to outgrow it practically before you can get it in the water the first time.
My advice would be to just let him pick the board he wants. That way it will be "his" and he'll probably want to ride it more. Just my thoughts.
If I was the kid picking the board, I'd get the Obrien for the graphics alone. |

My 5 year old rides a Hyperlite 121.
It is a little big for him (at 54lbs) but the only bad effect I seen is that he has a lot of trouble righting himself if he falls on his face.
If he is just starting out, err on the side of too big and get 2"+ fins to help with getting the board to track straight.
There are plenty of boots offered that fit all of Size 1-5. |

HHI Dave - Oh how well I know, and my son is going to be gigantic, so I want to at least get a season out of this board He likes the Hyperlite Voyager 121 so I'm leaning towards that. He likes the O'Brien as well (graphics ) but I don't want to get a board that I don't know what bindings will fit.
howabouttheiris - Good to know, if your child can ride it I'm sure my giant can I already warned him a million times, "Now Scotty, you ARE going to fall, it WILL hurt but it's normal when you start out" He's like, "I know, it's ok" Oh how little they know right now _________________ Scott Goldsmith

I have sent both of you some photos of him riding.
Good luck getting the little ones into the sport.
It is a whole lot easier to get a permission slip from the wife when you take one of the kiddos along. |

seeing that a five year old is using a real board, makes me wonder... I was going to purchase this for my daughter, who will be six in about a week. She is mid-size, only about 45lbs. Seems to be a good product for her to learn and pretty much pushes water at trolling speeds. Anybody have experience with this?
Once she gets bigger, she can ride my wife's board, so I really don't have to worry about boards, just bindings as her feet will be a bit smaller I'm sure. |

barelfly,
I own one of those. My son used it to start, but to be honest, he used it 2-3 outings. He went from that to a kneeboard for 4-5 outings.
The ski you show can not really be driven that slow. If you go slow, it will violently slash from side to side, you need to go about 10 mph or so..... Which is about the speed your daughter will need to wakeboard.
I personally recommend a kneeboard that has a handle hook in the front. She can learn to stear, with out holding the handle. Then she can get used to riding holding the handle. Then doing slides, crossing the wake, etc.
HHI Dave,
Congrats.... Boats, airplanes, and ladies. The 3 things that are cheaper in the long run if you were to just rent. |
