I want to try to make my own wakeskate but need some help. For example whats a good cheap light wood to use? Also would just a normal 3" continuos rocker work? What type of epoxy should i use to make it? And lastly how many layers of 1/8" thick ply should i use to make the board.
I was just wondering how easy it would be to ollie with a continuos rocker.
Also what would i use for griptape if i wanted foam? I no its not really as good but i don't want shoes and just want this for a little fun. Also would be nicer to have something that won't be annoying in the boat. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the info but that doesn't really tell me what type of wood is best and what type of epoxy i need. Also can i just do 3, 1/4" layers or is it a better idea to do six 1/8" layers? thanks.

Pconn5, definately go with more, thinner layers. For the same reasons that you wouldn't just use one 3/4" piece instead of 3 1/4" pieces.

Well im just going to have a continuos rocker. Im going to have 3in high wood piles on each side to but the tip and tail on. Then put weight in the middle so it bends to the ground. Allow the board to dry together fully in this position and you will have a 3 in continuous rocker. I need to no what kind of epoxy/ adhesive i need to use for the board before i can make it though? I have some polyurethane waterproof adhesive glue and will coat it in urethane paint will that work? Also how much does a wakeskate normally weigh?

Where can you buy the eva foam for a wakeskate. Im prepared to get harped on about how great grip tape is but i don't want to where shoes and i don't feel like having the grip tape on the boat. Its a pain. I just want something to mix up with my wakeboarding this summer but if i start to like it i might try grip later. So where can i buy some foam? Is there an alternative type foam i can get from home depot? And how do you keep it stuck when it gets wet? thanx

Cool that you are trying it yourself. My son is making a wake board in shop at skool. We are total noobs. To use good materials actually costs a fair bit. We got 2 sheets 60 by 60 inches of one eighth birch plywood for 24 bucks. He cut that into 6 pieces 20 by 60 inches and is going to glue it with titebond3 which is like white glue but more water resistant. People told us to go epoxy but it is too messy and double the cost and I think with the varnish the titebond3 will be good enough. We bought a gallon of glue for about 50 bucks. Hopefully it will do for 2 boards. He made a glueing jig block using 12 pieces of spruce 2 by 6 cut on a band saw with a 3 stage rocker like the top drawing on the above photobucket link. That way it will have good compression and should hold most of the rocker. We guessed that some of the rocker would unspring, so we went 3.25 inches(80mm) on the jig. The 12 2 by 6 boards cost almost 50 bucks. Hopefully the rocker will be good and we can use the jig for more boards now including a skate. The dimensions on the drawings are millimeters. The bottom drawing is the shape we drew out for the first wake board. Any tips would be appreciated. I think we have all the other supplies figured out. Will drill right through the board for barrel nuts to hold the bindings from underneath.

I no what you mean that it can get very expensive. I also didn't go with the epoxy but a different water sealant glue i am just now putting on the layers of urethane paint to make it water resistant. It seems to be coming out good. I didn't want to spend too much so i went cheap on the wood with 4 layers of 3/16 in luan plywood. The wood itself is supposed to be water resistant but it is very heavy. I hope it will float well despite being very heavy. Will probably take me a whole week to finish up the painting because of school. I also need to find foam to put on the board but if i can't then i will have to put grip tape. so if anyone has anywhere to get the foam for cheap tell me! good luck with your board.

Pconn5, do you have any boat supply stores around you? they should have something that you can use for the foam.
today i was at a boat store and they had all kinds of foam.
also if you are near the ocean or live where people surf, go to a surf shop and ask them for spray on wax. i used to use it for my longboard. it would last 8-10 days surfing, then you just spray it on again. it goes on clear so you can put some cool graffics on the board.
i'm thinking about making my own wakeskate, but right now i have no where to build it. i will be using the spray on surfboard wax. i'll google it and see if i can find a brand. it's been a few years since i've used it.

Im not sure if there is a way to get it to print in true dimension off a regular printer but if you have access to one of the large hp plotter style printers those would do it.
Also i have finished my board but can't ride it for awhile. It came out pretty good. I threw it in the lake and it floated good and was sealed from the water great no problems with that. My griptape job was terrible but good enough to start learning on but will have to be replaced for looks once it gets used up a bit. Also another problem i found is that it is very heavy. This is mostly because of using cheaper plywood and not spending the money on lighter plywood. I also probably could have gotten away with only three layers but i thought mine as well go big and cut off on later boards then have too weak of a first board. I will try to get pics up some time tommorow if i can. The method i used works great and you don't have to build a fancy jig. Only problem is if you want concave and a 3-stage rocker instead of continuous like mine. Thanks for the help.
P.S.- On weight, what is the avg. weight of a factory board. I couldn't seem to find it. Thanks.

have you been on it yet?
it looks pretty good!
the bottom line is how it rides, you should PM Beaver. He has made some nice skates as well. I am sure he could give you some pointers.
NICE JOB FOR A FIRST SKATE!

No i haven't been able to ride it yet and probably won't for hopefully a few weeks but probably longer. I will post how it rides. Anyone know what a decent 41" skate weighs?? i think my board weighs in at around 9.5 lbs. i think thats pretty heavy. Thanks for the complements.
Also this is my first time riding so shoud i put fins on or do you think i can do without fins as it is? I have wakeboarded and can edge pretty well and am progressing but first time on a skate. Don't feel like screwing into the board though.

Pconn5, 41 is coming in around 8-8.5 I believe. Check the integ page to be certain.
Ride all boards with and without fins and decide what you like.
Many people are riding without fins, I prefer no fins myself.

Devon, I'd say it really depends on the glue you are using, but I glued mine one layer at a time and left it for teh night and a little into the next day. Now this worked for me but im not sure if this much time is neccessary with a faster drying glue.
muckmeister, Ok thanks so mine isn't too heavy for a cheap homemade board. I think that I will try no fins first and if it feels too loose then i will try to screw on some fins.
Thanks for the help.

no you buy thin wood and make your own plywood...
he used 3/16" wood glued together.
i'm gonna be making my own in a few weeks and i'm using some 1/8" wood.
re read the first few posts, and also click the first link that smwilliam posted

Yes, i used the 3/16 in wood (or whatever it is in millimeters like they put it in the store) and glued 4 layers together (i think the fourth might have actually not been needed). I would go with what jdmcivicman is doing and go the 1/8th route and do 5 or six layers. It may take longer but will probably be better and read the link posted it really helps. I would have used 1/8 but i couldn't find any.

um i'm not sure about in canada but do you guys have homedepots or lowes.
where ever you buy your 2x4's should have thin wood.
it'll probably be in with the plywood, it comes in a 4'x8' sheet.
i've used it on a fish tank stand one time.
i used cheap plywood and put nice 1/8" red oak over it, then i stained the oak and it looked like a really expensive stand, but it only cost $50
i wish i had a pic of it.
so pretty

I'm definitely going to do this this summer, (build a skate).
I'm wondering if anyone ever found out and good types of foam to use or where to get it and how to put it on? I think I'll probably just go with grip tape at this point unless anyone has any good ideas....
Also, since this will be my first wakeskate or time even trying to wakeskate this summer,
I was wondering if you guys could give me some reccomendations on good dimensions, length, width, tip/tail width, rocker.
I am 6 feet tall and about 160 pounds, thanks

I am planning on making my own skate and I am a little confused at some of the steps.
So do you cut the shape of the wakeskate, glue them together, and then bend them?
and also I want to give my skate some concave, how would you do that?
I want to make it really nice and am willing to spend lots of time working on it so I want it to be very sturdy and good.
thanks
