DIY Board Repair

Alright I have seen the Suncure for wake boards but I think this damage is way worse than what that is intended to fix. I thinking about just buying some fiberglass and trying to get it flat. This isn't the board I ride but I am tired of my buddies without boards stretching out my bindings. I would really like to get some suggestions before I just wing it! Thanks

frymantcu, I totally understand what you're saying about having a "loaner" board to keep people out of your personal bindings.

I have an el-cheapo Free Motion board with a set of old CWB Torqs (thank's Muckmeister) that is my loaner board. From here on, no one rides my personal boards.

I would try to peel some of that old outer skin off and save the foam thats in there then just be sure to sand the area that the glass will touch the old skin with something rough like 120 , maybe even 2-3 inches back from the broken edges all around , with a D/A sander is best.

Glassing is pretty easy just cut some squares in the shape of the repair starting small and getting bigger then the hole at the end and then lay them all out on cardboard and mix the resin and then take a brush and pre soak the glass with resin (you gotta work fast will set up on you) id do the top let dry then do the bottom.

Another trick is after you lay the soaked glass wrap with alumminum foil to get it to hold a shape , make sure your glass layers are low compared to final level then grind off all the excess and do a layer of just resin at the end to get final shape and filling pin holes. You could then just sand the whole board and do a flat black epoxy primer and maybe some simple stencil design or just some stickers.

Nils_Lars, Thanks man that gives me a big boost of confidence since I was not really excited about messing with the fiber glass. I would think spray paint would get messed up in the water so I was wondering about the final paint job! Where could I find the black epoxy primer?

I messed around with it some today. I had to remove some of the foam in order to get it back flat. But I used some JB weld, super adhesive, to fill in the gap. I'm gonna wait over night for it to fully dry then start the sanding. I am not sure but from what I have torn into so far it look like there is only one layer of fiberglass then what looks like a vinyl wrap.

I had a smaller ding on the side rail and corner, does anyone know if the JB weld will hold water out or should i use a small piece of fiber glass on it? You can see what I'm talking about below.

Anything you put on has to have good mechanical adhesion which is sanding or grinding any area that filler goes in , Im sure that JB weld will work so would 2 part epoxy but you gotta sand the area under farther out then where it goes and I can see you have that JB weld in areas with unsanded glossy topcoat on the board.

You should be able to hit anything you put on there with a grinder or sander and have it not flake or roll off so I would sand that stuff back till you hit the broken edge then sand the surface of the JB weld too before putting a top filler , you could even use polyester putty as a final coat. Deffinatly make sure to sand the entire board with like 240 before you prime so it will stick good. As for primer id check someplace that sells paint for automotive use , if you cant find one call a autobody shop ask who they buy from , then just tell the guys its for marine/boat use and they can give you an idea what will work (should even be able to find some decent stuff in rattle cans)

Nils_Lars, Thanks your input was really a good help. My computer crashed so I don't have pics of the fiberglass portion of the repair but here's the final product if...I add a bunch of stickers in hoping no one will look to closely I got impatient and rushed my sanding job but overall I think it turned out really good, can't wait for the test run!

Ya looks like you did a nice job on the paint work there , you found some primer and paint someplace?

Glad to see you could save a old board as opposed to it going to the bone yard.

Yeah, it turned out alot better than anticipated. I didn't use a primer just a light sanding over the whole board, then I used a spray enamel from HomeDepot. The sanding gave the enamel a really flat look, kinda like last the 06 Watson. The spray can said it was for appliances so it should be really tough, hopefully it will hold up to the abuse of the water! The can said water resistant but not water proof, I don't know if paint is the same as my watch but I have a feeling I might have to repaint it after each season...Do you know of a good waterproof sealer? Preferably clear

I wouldnt worry about clearing it im sure what you did will hold up for many seasons as long as you did good prep work ( making sure there are no shiny spots that didnt get sanded , and wiping all the dust and grease or wax off)
