Her family just got quite rich I would imagine. People do the stupidest crap for things. $250 would have bought her one and instead now she's dead.

I pretty much am thinking the same thing. Radio station could have covered themselves by making sure she went to the hospital after the contest or all the contestants for that matter.

That's the part that I don't get. There have been a lot of fraternities in the news lately for water intoxication, but people still decide to take the chance. Do people not read the paper, look on the internet, or even watch TV?

However, I don't think the radio station should be held liable. They didn't force this lady to participate. She chose to do this on her own and I think the liabiliy shoud start and stop with her. This is America though, so I am sure the family will cash in.

I don't think the station should be liable either. People should be responsible for their actions.

But, I remember reading a case a long time ago were a radio station was holding a contest and people had to drive to locations and the first ones to arrive got tickets. Once they were given away at one location, the radio station would annouce another lcoation and people would rush there. One of the people got in an accident and the radio station was held liable.

If they were liable, my guess is this station would be too.

Who knows if she was made aware of the health risks of consuming too much water? I would safely guess that not everyone is fully cognizant of the danger.

Sodium level and that would be a yes but there's more to it as well.

It's more dangerous than most people think. Strangely enough people die by drinking too much of what makes up most of our body. Neutral

A buddy and me had a water drinking contest years ago, but that was quick drinking so we didnt make it all that far thankfully.

There have also been several studies which suggest that drinking water when you are not thirsty can lower cognitive function. Maybe eight glasses a day isn't ideal for everyone.

a station here in vegas painted a rock red and put it somewhere in the desert.
first one to find it won "something" people were going out there with no water or anything then getting lost.
one dumb ass drove her mini van "off road" with no food or water, she got stuck and it took 3days for police to find her.
the radio did not pull the contest.
they simply said "make sure you have a map, food, water. and pay attention to where you are and how to get back out"
i'm not sure if anyone won that or not. it was pretty funny watching the news everyday.

One of my friends host that radio show. I'm not sure if the contest was their idea or the stations.

I want to know how many she consumed. That's 2 Gatordades in 2 hours.

Hard to believe the station can be held liable for such a minimal amount. I'd bet anything she has something wrong with her physically that led to this.

Nor*Cal's friend and the rest of the radio show staff have been suspended during the investigation.

A year or so ago a kid died from this same thing during some weird frat hazing incident at Chico.

You think the radio station folks would have thought about that as it wasn't all that long ago. Neutral

A woman in my home town was found guilty of manslaughter several years ago after forcing her 5-year-old daughter to drink several two liter containers of Pepsi.

I'm curious if this was a stunt thought of by the station or the show. And from my impression all the stunts/contest are approved by the station lawyers.

Haven't called her because of the situation. I will work on getting some details.

jt09, the news is saying 224 ounces over 3 hours. We've had 18 pack races in less than 3 hours and been fine. If my math serves me that's a few ounces more than an 18 pack race.

Nor*Cal, yeah but your beer contains that necessary sodium that is flushed out by consuming too much water. And alcohol is a diuerectic. So your are expelling alot of water along the way. Basically if they alternated between water and Gatorade I think she would have been fine.

nmballa, or give them salt tabs as they left the station or during the competition. I understand the biology/chemistry that's involved in the situation. Like if it had been gatorade instead of water... It's not too much water as much as it's the flushing and loss of mineral.

Nor*Cal, that would have been a simple solution. Wow hindsight is a bitch. Probably one salt tab as they left would have done it.

See, those numbers don't work w/ the 8oz every 15 min.

But damn. 224oz is a LOT! Remember, part of this contest was that they couldn't pee. If I'm chugging 18 beers, I'm doing it outside w/ my fly down.

OMFG.

During the show, a caller called in about the risks of this contest, and the DJs claimed they were well aware of the dangers of water intoxication, boasted how they were not responsible for any health problems...

OMFG... the woman who died was put on air several times... she even stated that her head began to hurt and her stomach was distended. They are all laughing about it and talking about how she looks like she is pregnant. They are playing it back right now on another station (AM Talk) and no sh*t they are laughing about the distended stomach and the headache and playing it off like it is nothing.

She bailed on the contest when offered floor tix to the Justin Timberlake concert.

These DJs are so screwed, and so is the station/parent company. Civil attorneys have just got to be licking their chops right now.

chavez, Heard that on Fox News earlier today. The DJs comment was also that the contestants signed a waiver so they weren't liable for any problems.

I'd say that the family can pretty much buy anything they want now......

Dragonlady8, they could have signed it in blood. It won't matter. They knew.

Wrongful death suit is about to hit their doorstep. And rightfully so. I'd sue them back to the stone ages and I'd have a hellofatime not going off the res and going after them physically - especially after hearing how nonchalant they were about the whole thing.

Hell just thinking about the stupidity involved literally makes me angry.

F*cking morons. Sorry Mik, your friend is a god damned idiot and so are the others.

Dragonlady8, or at a minimum had an EMT/MD/DO/RN on site - somebody who could at minimum say hey dumba$$, she needs to go to an ER NOW.

Instead LOL @ --> her Rolling Eyes

Idiots.

I heard that as well on my radio station. Even the female DJ said something about somebody dying from it. Then the call from the woman saying it can be fatal.

Those poor children she left behind.

haugy, exactly.

And don't get me wrong, she is just a stupid as them for doing it, but damned if they couldn't have stopped it.

Other contestants are calling in to the talk show I am listening to and they are mostly claiming they had no idea of the risks.

The Sheriff was also on and while he doesn't think there will be any criminal negligence charges filed, detectives are investigating and he can't rule it out. Shocked
