the most common one is "fake a lake"
http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=32740
But I don't think it's the best. There are a ton of threads on here about cheaper/better alternatives if you search the boat forum.
For mine, I just detached the hose from the strainer and clamped the garden hose into its place. Total cost = $0 and it doesn't run the risk of sliding off and over-heating your engine. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Remember to not have the hose turned on fully, a little over half-on. _________________ My opinion is my opinion!

Really? Why is that?
If you put the raw water intake into a bucket and fill the bucket with water and keep the hose on full blast the impeller will still suck more water than the hose can put out. Not that this is hard on anything, I'm just curious why you say half on? _________________ wakeboards

I made my own fake a lake from parts I bought at Ace Hardware.
Toilet Plunger: $1.50
Hose End: $2.00
Screw Clamp: $1.00
Dowel: $1.25
Total: $5.75
Works great. Stays the same temperature as it does when in the lake. |

DRAGON88, What happens is the excessive force coming in to the plunger blows out the sides and creates air pockets in the suction basin. This in turn reduces the suction efficiency of the intake. Not a huge deal, but can lead to increase operating temperature and overheating. _________________ My opinion is my opinion!

| Isn't your intake hose after your impeller? If you do bypass it, won't you burn up your impeller this way? |

Ummmmm...intake hose comes from a hole in the bottom of my boat to the impellar. My faucet thingy is between the hole in the bottom and the tranny cooler. So, it's before the impellar.
That would be pretty silly to put the faucet after the impellar, that would be really bad for my impellar and tranny cooler/tranny. _________________ Check out https://www.facebook.com/darcizzleoffshore |

Your intake hose should come from the brass strainer on the bottom of the boat, got throw a filter then threw the raw water pump. Thats at least how it goes through my boat. I just unhook my intake house from the filter and hook up a home made hose with a garden hose connection to it, and be done with it. _________________ stay clean, like me

| Ok, well on my boat (I/O), there isn't any sort of hose until after the impeller. Thanks for clearing that up. |

That's because your impeller is in the lower unit. |
