You want a ride... Try it behind a boat....My son worked it out... got pretty good at it.. the wipe outs were a little dangerous.... never knew where that skim board was going to resurface... _________________ JRP |

jakenj, I'm by no means an expert at skim boarding, but it sounds like you are missing the point of it. You throw the board down on wet sand after the wave has started going back out towards the water, almost like you are chasing it. You skim across the sand and then onto the water and then catch the next wave coming in. You can either jump off of that wave, or ride it like you are surfing.
At least that's how people in the Outer Banks use them. They have really small waves there which makes surfing impossible (unless there's a hurricane.) Maybe where you are in Florida the conditions are different and people use skim boards differently? Just trying to make your riding experience a little better, sorry if I'm out of my lane on this one... _________________ Whoever coined the term "Near Beer" was a very poor judge of distance... |

Check to see if your board has any rocker on it(curve on your board). If it doesn't then it is more difficult to go farthur. Also check the size of your skimboard. Search online for SIZING CHARTS cause the board you might be using may be too small. Also check for any thing that can cause friction on your board at the bottom. Wax helps to keep your feet on the board. If your having trouble with your appraoch or throw, make sure you have your back hand on your tail and your front hand on the side closest to you.Next run as fast as you can and almost do a push so that the board goes 5 ft in front of you. While your running and the board is moving in front of you try to hop onto it and have a stance like a skateboard. While your riding make sure your wieght isn't on your nose i'm not saying lean back... just put your feet more back on the board. When you get the riding down you can try shuv-its, big spins, surface spins, and if you have a rail you can learn the boardslide, 50-50, and mabe you should learn the ollie also. If your into the waves you WILL WANT ANOTHER BOARD IF YOU HAVE A CHEAP WOODEN ONE. Try looking at a ZAP or a VICTORIA or a SOL. THen wave riding will open a whole other door that i really don't feel like typing that much. IF YOUR STILL CONFUSED THEN LOOK IT UP BY GOOGLING WUTEVER YOUR CONFUSED ABOUT THERE IS MANY INFORMATION ON MANY SITES.

Yeah I want to know if you can wakesurf with these things. I have a pretty nice skimboard (it's a Victoria) but it's in Virginia...and I'm not. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should have it shipped to me so I can use it behind my boat. The only concern I have, is that the bottom of a skimboard is absolutely smooth (for obvious reasons) so no fins or anything to keep it stable like a wake surfboard would have. Anyone ever use one of these to wake surf? _________________ Whoever coined the term "Near Beer" was a very poor judge of distance... |

I've skimboarded and wakeboarded a long time now. I lived down in Newport beach for a while, the location of "The Wedge," a notorious skimboarding spot. If you want to go REALLY fast and far, you want to wait till there's as little water as possible. If you're trying to ride through thick wather, there's way too much friction on the bottom of the board, making you slow down really quick.
Wait till the wave washed out, and just keep practicing riding on less and less water, till you get to the point that it doesn't even look like there's water on the sand, but you're still riding it.
As far as getting pulled behind a boat on a skimboard, i tried it with my wood skimboard before i got a fiberglass board, and it was really sketchy. The bottom of the board (at least the wooden one) is completely flat. No rocker, or fins, which means the board basically does whatever it feels like. I couldn't keep control of it at all. I managed to stand up for about 10 seconds before i lost control, and i'm definetly not a noob wakeboarder either.
I would like to try riding behind the boat on my fiberglass board, but at 350-400 bucks a board, i feel waaaay too sketchy doing it. Skimboards aren't nearly as durable as wakeboards, believe me, i see them get broken all the time. It would be interesting tho cuz the fiberglass boards have much more rocker than the wooden ones.
If someone tries it, I'd love to hear about it. Seems like it would be a sweet idea. _________________ "What? When did the ballast break? Where's some fat chicks when you need them?" |
