Quote:
Redmond, WA – JD Webb, the 2004 Wake Awards "On Point" award winner, is set to make his national television debut on the Discovery Channel's new show "Stunt Junkies." Webb will attempt a 70-foot, ramp-to-ramp gap over the fountain at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando on September 30 in front of the "Junkies" cameras and an estimated crowd of a couple thousand. The fountain, which celebrates it's 50th anniversary this year, rises some 30 feet off the blue waters of Lake Eola and has become an icon of the city. To honor the stunt, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will present JD with a key to the city and will declare September 30 JD Webb day. Look for full coverage of the stunt at wakeboardingmag.com and in the Jan/Feb issue and stay tuned to the "Stunt Junkies" Web site to find out when the episode will air.

ramp to ramp? That sounds more dangerous than landing on the water.

Key to the city sounds like a bit of an over-kill.

ramp to water is like coming 40 feet out of the air and landing flat. Not happening. Ramp to ramp is the only way to do it.

key to the city of orlando present to a wakeboarder? geez way to go orlando. Rolling Eyes

Here are reason why other people have been presented a key to a city:

Quote:
Mayor Crosby with the “Key to the City” Award in recognition of his contribution to the promotion and support of the City of Tucson through the Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities.

Quote:

1980: Given to Saddam Hussein, because of contributions to several local Detroit Catholic Churches, in particular a $170,000 donation to a church that was in heavy debt.
January 31, 2006: Awarded by Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick to Detroit native Jerome "The Bus" Bettis, days before his Super Bowl win.

August 4, 2004: Nestor Sulpico, a Filipino-American taxi driver, was awarded the Key to the City in recognition of his honesty after returning a bag containing black pearls worth $70,000 USD that had been left in his cab.
September 25, 2005: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave the Dalai Lama the Key to the City, calling him "a moral beacon to millions around the world, with a clear and constant voice for human rights."

Landing on the water will be to hard

But a city key and a JD Web day?! Rolling Eyes

How big that 'lake' around that fountain?
Cool to see a wakeboat there too....
Cool

you guys are way too hung up on the whole "key to the city" thing and "jd webb day." trust me, school will be open on jd webb day. it's really not that big of a deal.

back to the stunt...i'd say ramp-to-ramp will be easier.

Path to glory? About 70 feet
Wakeboarder will attempt jump over Lake Eola Fountain Saturday
Eric Michael
Sentinel Staff Writer

September 29, 2006

It's a Wednesday morning on Lake Gum, and JD Webb is ready to go the distance -- again.

This time it will be 35 feet, measured by a contractor's tape tied between two ramps floating just off the professional wakeboarder's backyard. Never mind that the launch ramp is 15 feet tall and pointing skyward at a ridiculously steep angle. Or that the distance will grow wider and wider as the morning progresses. This is only practice after all.

BA-WHUMP!

Webb, 19, hits the launch ramp at more than 20 mph, sliding up the incline in a tight crouch. On the shore of the lake in rural northeast Polk County, a small group of friends hooting encouragement hushes as he reaches the apex.

With a slight pop from his legs, Webb is flying 25 feet above the water, his left hand flung to the side like a bull rider midbuck. The other clutches the tow rope, his lifeline to reach the landing ramp bobbing in the distance.

"The thing is," Webb will say later, "when you're heading up the ramp, you really can't see the down [ramp]. When I finally see it, all I'm thinking is, 'I need to land on that, or it's really going to hurt.' "

Thirty-five feet might as well be a hundred when you're hurtling through the air. And it's only half the distance he needs to survive the biggest challenge of his life.

Will he bring cake?

JD Webb has a special 50th birthday present for the Lake Eola Fountain.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, he will try to jump over that Orlando landmark on his wakeboard, an unheard-of feat that will be filmed for the Discovery Channel series Stunt Junkies.

If he lands the jump of about 70 feet safely, Webb will join a select group of action-sports athletes who have performed outrageous acts for that TV program, from skateboarding into the Grand Canyon with a parachute to jumping a motorcycle over the spinning blades of four helicopters.

On the line for Webb is national attention, a five-figure paycheck from Discovery and a key to the city presented by Mayor Buddy Dyer.

"It's more for the exposure than anything, for myself and the sport," says Webb. Plus, "I thought it was cool to get the key to the city -- I was pumped on that."

And so is the mayor, whose son is an "avid" wake-sports enthusiast. Dyer calls the stunt "a natural fit" to celebrate the fountain's birthday, although it actually doesn't turn 50 until next fall.

The early observance "is great exposure for Orlando and the sport," Dyer says.

"I had planned on jumping it myself," he jokes, "but if JD is willing to do that, it takes me off the hook."

'He's the man'

Webb is no stranger to dangerous midair situations. The Pro Wakeboard Tour's 2004 Rookie of the Year cheats gravity for a living.

"JD is ready to hit the prime of his career," says Ryan Lamos, team manager for Hyperlite Wakeboards, Webb's main sponsor.

Lamos dreamed up the Eola stunt. And according to him, Webb is a natural choice because of his ability on sliders, in which riders slide over elevated obstacles, and his personality.

"He's real comfortable in front of the cameras."

Adam Mensick, Webb's friend and competitor, agrees: "If there's any guy who can do it -- he's the man."

"[Wakeboarding's] just something that I love to do, plain and simple," says Webb. But he adds, "You also gotta look at it as a job . . . make sure you're always pushing the sport."

And Saturday's stunt will definitely be pushing limits. The fountain is no ordinary wakeboard obstacle. And the jump is no ordinary trick.

Challenge for ramp builder

A ramp-to-ramp jump is unprecedented in the world of wakeboarding, even without a towering green fountain looming in between.

The very thought of it has ramp builder Ryan Davis, "lying awake at night."

"It's the biggest gap ever done on a wakeboard," says Davis, whose action-sports-event company, Step Up Productions, built the $12,000 rigs.

"There are so many factors to consider: anchoring, crosswinds," he says. "And everything's floating. It's a real process to get it all dialed in."

So when city officials told him they were unsure just how wide and tall the fountain is , Davis rented a swan pedal boat on three occasions to take measurements and depth readings, "just to be sure."

The setup he devised employs two ramps: a "kicker" designed to launch Webb the 35 vertical feet necessary to clear the fountain and its plume, and a "down ramp," 30 feet in length, to give Webb a suitable landing target.

"It's the biggest thing that I've ever done," says Webb.

And the margin of error?

"No idea."

'Gotta have faith'

THWACK!

Webb lands the 35-foot practice jump hard, midway down the sloping platform, maintains his balance and rides away clean, exhaling through puffed cheeks.

Halfway there.

"Let's go to 40," he shouts to Davis, who is fine-tuning the ramp setup.

For the next two hours, Webb tries gaps of 40 and 50 feet, making six of the nine jumps successfully. Three times, he goes down hard. Once he almost overshoots the down ramp, smacking the water backward.

Crashes such as this might erode the confidence of some, but Webb is pragmatic.

"Mentally, you've just gotta have faith in yourself that you can do it," he says. His mother, Susan, who witnessed his first failed jump and retired inside to "clean his windows," shares that game plan: "I just pray a lot."

Does JD consider himself a lucky man?

He knocks his knuckles on the wood frame of the ramp and shrugs. "So far," he says.
