PostPosted: Sep 18, 2006 10:21 am    Post subject: Took my friend wakeboarding and now he is in the hospital Reply with quote

We were out yesterday and my friend was wakeboarding and he went for a small jump. This is his 3rd time wakeboarding. Well he smacked the water and was dazed. Of course being the man of compassion that I am I laughed my butt off. Well we got him in the boat and he could remember who he was, just not the date and he could not walk very well.

Took him to the ER and they gave him a Cat Scan and admitted him to the hospital. I called his wife this morning and there is still no change in his condition.

He is still very slow to answer and says "head hurt". I expected him to snap out of it by now.

Any help or experience with this?

The way you said it makes it sound like she's fine, why is she going to the doctor?

He's got a big time cuncussion man, the kind that ends NFL carreers. with good care, his brain will shrink back down and he'll be fine. Pray there is no perminent brain damage. Good luck.

sorry guys, but thats probably a contusion. i.e. a severe concussion with the possibility of internal bleeding. was he at all irritable or combative? Is he now? Hopefully the Drs are on the ball and keeping him away from light and sound, or anything that stimulates the senses. My prayers go out to him.

King of the Tigers,

The same thing happened to a friend of mine. He broke his femur and had to be CareFlighted off the lake. He had gotten up the day before and he was just trying to get up again and broke his leg. Crazy.

We always thought it was a freak thing or maybe a tiny pre-existing weakness or something.

Ya Fuel, I was clueless. It was his first time ever trying wakeboarding but he was a skater and had taken some rough falls in the past. I especially felt bad for him because he had a super hot ex girlfriend in the boat, that my cousin invited, not knowing that they'd dated before.

It's certainly possible that if he has had any recent trauma that he has second impact syndrome. Each the time the brain takes a hit is ability to withstand another impact is diminished. It usually results in an injury when a slight impac occurs but in severe cases can be fatal. Concussions if not allowed to heal are cumulative. There are many who believe that they never really totally resolve and the damage just gets worse each time.
Also where the brain impacts the skull can result in different symptoms. For Example Vision is usually in impact in the back of the head but there can be what is called a countercoup closed head injury where the brain impacts the skull on the opposite side from the actual point of impact.

Best of luck to your friend

Thanks for the info.. Here is an update.. He is still in the hospital; he has had 2 MRI's and a catscan. All confirm that he does not have a bleed. He is talking a little better today, but still not normal. He will stay in the hospital tonight again.

The real kicker, he is waiting to hear if he has been accepted in a doctoral program tomorrow. I am praying for his healing and I appreciate everyone else who is as well.

Thanks..

Because her equalibreium(sp?) is still off and she still has some small problems with her eyesight. It sounds like she probably had some slight swelling to the brain which is what would have and still be causing her symptoms. She is going to the doc because these problems havent gone away fully and it is best to be safe.

vette74, Yup it's not anything we like to really talk about up here. The wakeboard world in NH is so small I wouldn't want the story to get out wrong or be misunderstood by anyone as disrespect.

I ride with most everyone that rides around here and this hit real close to home...I live on Country Pond and although the article says Country pond it really happened on Kingston Lake.

I'm just glad we were not behind my SANTE that day but very easily could have been.
As I try to type this with my jammed up hand from a wakeboarding crash I have to be happy that is my only problem so far.

STAY SAFE PEOPLE!!!!

wow. My thoughtsand prayers to the two peeps mentioned in this post. My wife and I went cliff-jumping at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park (here in MO). Over 50ft to the water. We just started wakeboarding this year, and while we've both hit the water kinda hard, it amazes me that you can get so injured so easily (like breaking a leg and not even get up, or get such a concussion you can't think straight a week later).
I gotta say, though, my wife and I both also race cars, and safety has always been a top priority. We take our concern for safety to the water, too, by always having a spotter, a ski mirror, and various simple hand gestures for communication- in addition, if we feel like we're out of control, getting tired, etc.
