Big props to Flixmaster for adding a winch forum. I hope it takes off well.. So who out here is winching? I just finished building one and did some test runs this weekend that were pretty successfull. Still planning to add spool and chain guards and get the whole thing powder coated soon. Heres a couple of shots from the beach saturday.. yea the picture dates are wrong. My old man did all the engineering and stress analysis.. We went with quite a different design than most ive seen. Raised the pull point up pretty high and put 1200 foot of rope on the spool.

| That one costed about a grand.. deep water starts great with that torque converter. We ended up going with steel instead of alluminum on the frame to keep cost down.. but its HEAVY... Im sure our next revision will be alluminum and maybe redesign that cube a bit in some of the wasted space spots. We really like the spool above the motor instead of in front of the motor like most are so that wont change. Not that a second revision will be coming anytime soon.. but we got an engineer and a welder in the back pocket so who knows.

you use winches to get anywhere you can't with a boat or jetski. in our case we live by a beach so you can get out off the shore and surrounding wetlands and ride for like $0.50 a day instead of nearly a $100 for a tank of boat gas. you can take gap river dams and all kinds of stuff. if you can tote it there you can ride there.
p.s. nice pics boarderX cool guy. looks good all finished up now. so uh yeah holla this weekend. i'm so ready to get mine up and running. i think we got supporting vendors for a rail jam in austin if ur interested in bringing yours as well. probably will go down sometime next year.

i love the design, and execution. I dont know if i could spend a grand on something that i wouldnt use all the time. But i like that design a hell of a lot better than the black box, or winch.
jlaws, i think those are pretty much the only use for a winch. I would take mine to the beach and park my truck in like 8 inches of water and set up a little slider and hit it all day. They might use it for more than that.

There are some guys out there building real barebone models for 500 bucks or even less.. You gota keep in mind that we've got 300 bucks for the 1200' of rope and about 200 something for the torque converter if i remember right. you can do it without the torque converter, but you might not be able to deep water start.. and most people are only putting 600-900' of rope on em. You can grab an old used moter... Plus the frame is way over kill obviously.. you can practically do a frame with nothing if you dont try to do what we did with the spool on top of it. So yea there was a bit of a splurge, but we had some big plans in mind for it. This is just prototype 1 in a way...
| jlaws wrote: | | exactly what besides sliders and pools would you use a winch for? (not being a smar -A** just wondering..) |
no offence taken, i used to wonder the same thing when I first heard about em. But theres a few things that come in handy like some TypeRider mentioned.. You can basically ride all day for a dollar or two. You can go anywhere you want to carry the thing because you can stake it down, it doesn't really need to be in a trailer hitch. and 3... your imagination is your limit.
This video on alliancewake was a big inspiration for us living down here by the beach. Watch Sean Obrien do a tantrum off a wave like its a giant boat wake. I tried something similar and landed on my head in about two foot of water... not trying that again anytime soon...

*drool*
I can't wait to find some good gaps around here like the ones you found..
Just put a bunch more work into mine last night doing some fine tuning with the mini bike throttle. Planning to test run it one more time before ripping it apart and getting it powder coated.
Is that the Grinch by Distortion? It looks identicle in design. $2200?

BoarderX, So your running a 6.5 hp mini bike motor? I was thinking about using my dads old ride on lawn mower. I think its a 12hp but im not sure.
How significant is a torque converter, and what kind of rope did you use that you were able to find 1200 feet of

BoarderX, any thoughts on using a centrifugal clutch, like off a go-kart? just wondering, they come a lot cheaper that torque converters.

Thats another option. I hear you have to replace them more often tho.. and dont get me lying, but i *think* thats what the Grinch and Blackbox commercial version winches use. Too busy at work right now to verify that but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. I am very pleased with the torque converter, but thats all i can say as far as personal experience goes.
Also, I gota give props where due to TypeRider for helping me get the parts list together for my winch... even if i did have to exchange one part and a couple others are still in the box All in all that dude helped a ton. Now Typerider, why dont you finish the dang winch you started months before this one was started! Slacker!

Ya you could. If i built one i would use it year round for snowboarding, wakeboarding/wakeskating, and skateboarding. Still debating on whether i want to take the plunge and build one. There are not a whole lot of ponds locally that i could go and hit up, and the beach is an hour away, and not a whole lot of my friends are into wakeboarding so this would be something I wouldnt use all that often....probably not going to build one although i wish i could

chriscut,
saw this on one of your web pages.. is this the one you rode behind?
That is one hulluva interesting design! In one of the pictures you can see they are actually using a 13hp honda motor. thats a winch with muscle! You know anything about its design?

BoarderX, that winch is owned by Zak Stone, hes the only guy in the USA with that winch. its called the neverride hive, from Switzerland. they are about 10k but well worth it if you have the money. it runs super smooth and is simple to operate. its more of a competition winch or a winch three guys would all go in on. It pulls super smooth and never lacks power. you can edge as hard as you want but the hydraulic clutch doesn't weaken the torque of the thing. Its also built with the best materials, i think the frame is titanium even? Its such a nice winch. we hit up mission bay on some sliders and in that pic we hit up some waves in San Diego, good times.

Setting up a slider on a man made beach in front of the university down here this weekend to put a show on for the kiddos I think Should be a great spot for winching.. check it out.

you said you have 1200 feet of rope so can you go out 1200 feet in the lake or something and be pulled in that much

wakeboardin2k4, thats not my winch, it belongs to Zak. Hive's run about 10k but if you want one you'd have to wait till next spring because they are sold out until then i hear.

Yes supposedly, but we're yet to actually pull that much rope out. Its more likely to come in handy goin 1200 foot sideways down a beach than 1200 out into the middle of a lake unless we got a jetski or somethin to transport, but then that kinda defeats the purpose.. 4 football fields is a long friggin walk draggin all that rope!
| chriscut wrote: | | that is a sick spot! the points of sand that go out will work great. get some pics/video and post em! |
Yea we think its gonna be a good spot if the university cops dont give us too much trouble. Hopefully it'll go down this weekend, but if not, its our next target regardless. I'll see about getting some video for sure.
