Taking off the fins

I read in another thread that if you take your fins off with no intention to put them back on you have to fill in the holes so the water doesn't get to the foam of the board. Is this true?

I never heard that and i do not think it is true...i have had mine off for like 2 years and it works fine...nothing has happened to the board
