Hey, I've been wakeboarding for a few months now and recently I've got my girlfriend pretty interested in the sport as well. She's doing a great job trying to get out of the water, but the rope keeps being pulled from her hands. I've let her know to keep her weight back, keep the board pointed at about a 10 degree angle, and anything else I can think of. Is there something else she could try or does she just need to work on her grip?

Grip could be a problem
Quote:

keep her weight back

this could cause her to resist getting onto the water. just get her straped in in shallow water with a handle and you take the rope about 2m 6' off the handle and tell her to just squat and let herself be pulled up. just like you are being the gentle man and giving her a hand up. pull on the rope and she should start to rise onto the top of the water. this is easier than a boat because the angle of the rope is mostly up. tell her to take the handle and touch it to her leading hip as she rises.
hopefully this helps.
if not get her to roll onto her side with the board pointing towards the boat and all her weight on her back foot with the rope running over the boats nose this should cause her to come out of the water ridding
this generally works and then they can learn the propper way as this is fiddly to set up.

According to comments I have read here.....Your arms must be straight so the pull is on the whole body not just the arm muscles. If arms are bent the hand ligiments will tire and the hands will involuntarily open and let go.

Nice suggestions, when we go wakeboarding this weekend I'll give them a try. Any additional suggestions are more than welcome!

Make sure her arms aren't bent!

have her work on her grip strength a bit, I could suggest a few excercises for her that would benefit you as well! Shocked

like biglouie said, it's probably grip strength that's getting her. In my experience, when people are learning to wakeboard, that's the limiting factor for the first day or two...insert sexually suggestive comment about grip strength here.

I've found that when I'm trying to get girls up on a board the first time a slower pull helps. I use about half the holeshot I normaly would and then once they are starting to come out of the water open it up the rest of the way. It takes alot of the initial shock out of it and makes it a little easier on girls.

^^ I had the same problem when I started, and I found that my driver was just pulling too hard off the start.

I know gloves are a big nono around here, but they definitely help with newbie fatigue when you're first getting people up. When I take new people out they usually last 8-12 failed starts without gloves, and 15-20 failed starts with.

Also, no need to hammer it out of the hole. A slower start is your friend.

Her arms are bent. She's too busy trying to keep her arms bent and of course arms are stronger then hands so her hands let go. Moreover, if the boat is pulling one way, and she is pulling the other way (which she is b/c that is what bent arms do) she is creating excess hand/grip pressure. She can slalom grip it if she really wants, but her arms are bent.

Oh, did I say her arms are bent?
