I've seen a bunch of posts where people have converted the back seat of their DD's into a sun deck. Has anyone tried to do sort of wrap around seating like a V Drive, or sort of like the Malibu XTI? I'm thinking something that would allow another person to sit on the side or looking back opposite the driver and be stretched out... Here's a hack job of what I mean.

It would work.. but you have to think of leg room. I mean if you put an extra wrap around seat there then the engine will be in total way of where your legs rest. I personally would make a seat right behind the driver... facing the wake. but just my opinon.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I mean except with it extended you could lay back with your legs up, or sit at the side with your legs down and still watch riders while sitting sideways.

Supra came out with this on their Comp 20 and Launch 20. This is actually built in to the deck and has a cooler located under this seat. This isn't just a jump seat. You could probably built a jump seat for any boat fairly easy though.

I think making a jumpseat would be the best option. That would make sure you have legroom for both the person sitting behind the driver and the person in the back seat. In our DD we always used to keep the cooler there but what you could do is just built in a cooler into the jumpseat like Supra did. I can't think of many situations where you would want to sit facing sideways rather than backwards also.

Jon, that looks pretty cool, I hadn't seen that configuration before.

ontrider, would one of these fit there. I think the bases can be cut down to adjust height if needed. They come in a variety of colors that might match your existing seats.

Roger, that is what I was thinking, just the more modern looking versions:

That's one of the reasons I was thinking of wrap around seating... because the ballast on the side of the engine compartment could then be hidden (at least on one side), and you would have feet on it anyways with a single seat.

Oh, if you're planning on putting ballast on the sides of the engine then I would do wrap around seating on both sides. How much does the locker hold? If you put some lead plates under the backseat that might be enough rear ballast. Then get a sack for the locker and maybe one for the bow.

If you really need ballast on the sides of the engine I'd do it like this:

Yeah, that makes sense too but not sure if I necessarily want to be crawling over seats... some good ideas here though. You just shop that last one?

Here's more what I meant... which is basically the other one you drew. Laughing

I think building something in the back is a good idea. It helped us out a lot with our direct drive... but building something that wraps around, and affects the walkthrough area on either side of the engine is really going to kill the already limited space you have in there. In my opinion anyway. Unless you built it to be long, low and flat. And carpeted. Something you can walk on, and climb over - and in a pinch - sit on.

I assume you've seen this project that I completed, right?

crawling over seats is better than crawling over fat sacs. Because you can step on seats with confidence. You can't add weight to that 1 wrap around side without duplicating it on the other side.

How much weight will the trunk fit? If you can get 500#s back there you could load up a couple hundred pounds of lead plates under the backseat and you wouldn't need side ballast. say 700 in the back and 700 in the front. The wake would be rampier than with more weight in the back but at least you didn't compromise any seating. The wake will still be good though.

At the moment we run three sacks, one each side of the engine -220 litres each and the the third up in the ski locker. Not sure how much that is but must be atleast another 200 litres. Plus we have around 120 kgs of lead which most of the time live in the rear underneath the seats but have to be moved towards the front of the boat if we have moe than 4 people onboard. This setup and 8 people on Sat morning made a huge wake.
If you made the wraparound seats would you want peolple stepping on the vinyl all the time or just make them carpeted?
