Has anyone just decided, hey I don't like this anymore and gone a totally different career route? If so... what were you doing and what are you doing now?

Just curious. Confused

Yes - but it won't be a completely different career route... and seeing as I just decided this within the last week or so, I haven't made any changes yes.

b_girl, what do you want to do? Isn't sifting through thousands of lines of meaningless code exciting enough for you?

ontrider,

lcap, made a good suggestion to me about this topic which i am currently acting on.

Work your solid stable job and in the free time start your new passion. It was a bit more detailed than that but that is the jist of it.

Thinking about giving up the internet porn industry? I thought you made a ton?

ontrider, Funny thing... I was just going to make a thread about me not liking my job and not knowing what to do..
Basically I'm tired of sitting behind a desk all day.. Problem is, I don't know what to do.. I was thinking of becoming a firefighter but here the competition is really stiff and there are not that many jobs anymore in that field.. Sure I could alway keep trying but it feels pretty hopeless.

ontrider, I'd rather sift through thousands of lines of meaningless code than spend a good portion of my day doing tech support... That, and I still work for a company in the UK, so being their only employee in the country is getting a little lonely/boring.

Was a Steel and Recycling Plant Manager. As glad as I was for the change of location, I do miss it. It was very labor intensive. I had 4 crews running 24/7. And I was always fixing things, or taking care of the usual business. Basically I was constantly moving.

But the being on call 24/7 and a few other details made me want to change careers. I moved locations, and got the job I am in now. Head of Marketing for a large family of dealerships. I am in meetings and behind a computer all day. I love my job now. But there are times I miss the feeling of "hard laborious work". That's probably why I enjoy building toys so much. It gives me that feeling of accomplishment after sweating under it.

Sounds like we're all in the same boat.

I'm an IT technician full time while going to school at night full-time (9+ units per semester)

The more I learn in school the more below me my job seems. I've been in the same posiiton for 8 years (first 3 years were interning) and the tech side doesn't excite me anymore.

I'll stay in the public sector (aka local government) but I've already told my boss that whether it be within IT, within the CITY or outside. I am positioning myself to make a move in a year.

Unfortunately what exactly that move will be won't be decided until later and is dependant on our growth priorites. as well as the economy and other city's growth priorities.

It's one of those hurry up and wait situations. All I can do is position myself properly so when the time comes, I'll have as many options available as possible.

I've switch quite a few careers before I even started. Was signed up for school to be an Auto Tech, then got into photography, then investing came along. I believe I'll be sticking with the investing for now though.

I imagine though if I had a house and family to pay for like some of you changing careers could be much more complicated.

My favorite saying relating to this topic would be "it's not called work because it's fun"

I currently work as an auto tech for jaguar, I got started in this field 8 or 9 years ago. When I was fresh out of high school and I hadn't really decided on a career, The engine in my truck started knocking and before I knew it I had gotten ripped off trying to get it fixed. I decided then I would never pay to have my cars fixed again. I have done very well at it, I also feel like I have outgrown it. I do like working on a flat rate commision pay rate. I can make 70+ hrs a week in a 45 hr week. I know eventually my ability to make good money at this will fade away though, I have been putting alot of thought into changing jobs, but I can't figure out what I want to do.

I was a sales manager at a motorcyle dealership making good money and having a good time then I got burned the **** out and drug up. Took a month off, hung out, bought a new boat, and now I'm selling boats at one of the biggest marine dealers in the country. I love going to work every day. That may not last forever, then I'll go sell airplanes. Surprised) Just kidding.
