I left my boat keys on the swim deck after filling it up, drive off and poof no boat keys. While we are mulling over our delima, some guy offers the use of a 'shop key' and sure enough it works. I had to give it back.

How generic are these keys? Is it just easier to get a new ignition switch? It doesnt seem very robust, should be cheap.

Past experiences / suggestions are appreciated.

I also tore the entire skeg off my outdrive while pulling the boat out, guess I'll be visiting the welder this week. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Great day, least I got some turns in.

Someone posted about a month ago that someone approached them at the lake and asked to try their boat key since they accidently lost theirs. I think they had the same mfg boat. Sure enough it worked. I think they stated that there are only a few key patterns made for many boat ignitions. You might try contacting your marine dealer about a replacement. It sounds like most are pretty universal and almost worthless from a theft prevention standpoint.

not really worthless I mean you would have to have the same boat. What theif would go buy a 5K-100K boat just go steal one? I know the wave runners just have a start button but they also have this clicker identicle to one you use for a car that will lock it up. I think that would be a nice thing for a boat to have!

vawakemonster, I don't think the cheap ignition switch setup I've seen on most trailer boats is actually designed to stop a theif. With a little practice they could probably figure out how steal these boats in less time than most owners spend fumbling with keys.

Roger, true but stealing a boat in freashwater is pointless.

I'm assuming you killed your prop too, unless you have a 2 blade prop. You will of course have to drain you lower unit fluid and remove the prop shaft seals so you don't melt them.

vawakemonster, I think they would have a point to stealing it and a plan.

No damage to the prop or outdrive thank god. I checked the outdrive fluid, the plastic prop insert tat takes the damage. I pulled out the ignition switch and took it to my shop, he found a key for it, aces.

yes most boat keys are the same.
all the ones ive had have been y11's. which is one of the most common keyblanks that exists.. cant you borrow the club key and run down to ace hardware and get a couple copies. will set you back less then 5 bucks.
