Don't drink before you have a drug test!!!
I was just about to hire someone who was gonna be a rockstar in my department. I have had a few and know the type. This one was gonna be good. But they failed their drug test - due to alchohol.
Jeez, can't ya at least wait until you have the job? They took the sample on Monday morning.
Guess they weren't as smart as I thought. |

If i remember correctly the alcohol portion covers 48 hours prior to the test... so that means he was drinking Saturday night? You wont hire someone for having a beer or two on the weekend?
Just because he failed the test doesn’t mean he was drinking the morning he took the test or anything. And who would think a (sales job?) would require you to be alcohol free. Many deals are closed over a drink. |

Were they trying to get over the flu or a cold? How about mouthwash?
If you really liked the person, wouldn't you let them defend the findings? _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

Folks, chill. Some places have a no-tolerance drug policy. That means any positive hit, no job. It's not like they're expected to take the test daily. I think the point was that he was dumb enough to go take the test too soon after he'd been drinking.
And I'm pretty sure haugy's not actually in sales, himself. _________________

Was it clearly stated to the candidate that his offer would be rescinded if his drug test came back positive for alcohol? _________________ Get Frugally Green!

I get the feeling like the guy was drinking the day of the test....????
Hard to imagine that they are running a zero tolerance alcohol on the weekend job site.... Is there such a thing....meaning when you are not on call or need to fly a plane in the next 24 hours...???? |

E.J., I'm thinking more like "no drinking on the job, or still under the influence when reporting." Taking the test is considered part of work responsibility, so testing positive is reporting under the influence. So they don't care if you drink over the weekend, or even at night, as long as you show up sober. (Meaning enough time has passed for it to work its way through your system. So going on a bender one night will likely get you in trouble the next morning.) Sounds like dummas was drinking Sun. night and wasn't smart enough to wait until later Mon. to take the test. _________________

gswake, No I’m guessing its a urine test and it shows positive I you have had any drinks in the last 48-72 hours. My friend is on probation and gets tested weekly at anger management... he got to choose the day of the anger management class so he chose Friday at 5PM so he can drink on the weekends. If he was to chose to take the anger management class on Monday evenings he would not be able to drink at all during the weekend because he would test positive. He wouldn't still be drunk from saturday night he would just fail the test. |

Job is not in sales
He knew alchohol and drugs were going to be tested for.
Job has a zero tolerance policy. Just like most.
Dlady he was allowed to defend himself. Let's just say he had a fun sunday night.
That answer everybody's questions? The idiot went out and got hammered on Sunday night. Like a fool. |

Zero tolerance as in you cannot be at work & intoxicated?
I work in government and we have pretty strict guidelines.....but you can/could have a beer at lunch....
I am still a bit confused as to if the guy just had alcohol in his system or was legally intoxicated? Also, with the zero tolerance...... Haugy, you can't have a beer at lunch? |

alcohol at lunch is a no-no in most professions.
the problem i have is if alcohol showed up in his system in the drug test (which i actually thought wasnt even tested for) what was his BAC? youd think if he was "legally" sober, meaning hed blow .08-.00 or a blood test showed he was not "intoxicated" it wouldnt matter what he peed.
alcohol isnt weed, or coke. it is a legal intoxicant. drinking it is not a deal breaker. at least it shouldnt be. if the guy was legally intoxicated, ten yes, no on the job, but if he was actually sober (which im uessing he was) then it shouldnt matter, no question. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/muxpux

If I dont want someone who drinks I wont hire one. Same as smoking pot.
A beer at lunch here would be a big no no, but if you're out at a restaurant for lunch I'm sure it doesnt matter. Since we dont care much, we give drug tests only when people are hurt due to insurance. Last person that got hurt had pot in their system.

Drinking alcohol is not against the law and doesn't usually end up with police involvement..... Again, I can have a few beers....in fact tonight, I am going to have quite a few beers.... But if I had police involvement, in any way, you can guarantee my employer would be involved. |

Employers are looking into your personal lives more and more especially if they provide ( pay for your premiums) insurance.
Also it's an image thing too. No company wants to deal with bad publicity. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

haugy, sure maybe he made a bad decision to drink on Sunday night. You seem to be very hars/judgemental of people. The fact that you liked him and wanted to hire him makes me think he's not an actual "idiot". _________________

Guy tested postive. You are allowed to be up to half of the legal limit WHEN TESTED, which is .04. He was over that! I was told by MY boss that wouldn't fly. I called him up to ask what the hell. The guy told me he had some friends in town, and they went out and got drunk.
Our company policy clearly states no one will be hired if they fail the test. I had no choice. Not to mention if he knows he's gonna get tested for alchohol and still goes and gets wasted the night before, it might have been a blessing in disguise.
Alchohol is of course allowed to be consumed, AFTER WORK HOURS. Hell I have knocked alchohol back with my boss at conventions. But when we are at work, there is no tolerance. I don't care, I like that. I don't like to drink when I work. But for the drug test, you have to come back squeaky clean. Just once! That doesn't mean you have to give up drinking. Hell they even give you an allowance by letting you get up to .04. The guy was stupid, and lost a good job because of it. Not because of me or my companies policy. |

he is an idiot. The last 3 jobs i have had all came with a drug test. Part of that test was for booze. If you are looking for a job - lay off the party for a while. It is well with in any companies right to not hire you based on failing a drug test. They can also with-hold employment for poor credit. All of this is supposed to be disclosed when the offer is made. Also, most offers come with the condition that background / drug test come back with no problems. Since this guy knew about the test and what they were testing for, he is an idiot for blowing it. _________________ Work SUX! |

Hopefully your legal dept has gone over that. Because if you are a "right to work" state, that won't fly, and could end up in court. But I also agree. Poor decision on that guys part. _________________ Brent B
