|
|
Ran over my rope for the first time last week (well my dad did). I cut off everything that was damaged and I retied the rope, because there was about 65 ft. left. I haven't decided if I am actually going to try it yet though. Anybody try this? Bad Idea? I don't think it could actually hurt anything to try it, but I thought I would ask here first.
oh if it really matters the rope is a Proline Dyneema. |

do what ontrider said, except maybe ask politely (yet firmly because he did mangle it), and then keep the retied rope as a backup, I'm sure you could find a way to retie it to the point that it is useable _________________ Keep Austin Weird |

I ran over mine and tied it in 3 places. I dont know how long it is exactly, but its long. Its a straight line little bitty skinny one. We tied it up and yes, I wakeboard with a trot line. LOL _________________ Imagination is everything, it is the preview of life's coming attractions. |

yea i would cut it down to a 50 for use behind a jet ski. just after cutting it tie not to prevent frailing and coming apart then tie a slip knot. good as new except too short for behind boat. _________________ Kurt14 |

Tie a regular knot in each end of the rope and then tie a zeppelin bend to get the two pcs back together. Works like a charm. Do an internet search for the zeppelin bend knot. It is an easy knot, easier to search than for me to tell you how to do it. _________________ Sattelyte Wakeskates

Ok I think I will keep using it for a while, but I will probably end up buying another since Prolines are priced pretty cheap (compared to other companies).
Ride DH, a dyneema or spectra rope shouldn't snap back into the boat, even if it breaks. |

a fishermans knot will work quite well for you... basically you lay the 2 ends of the
rope parallel to each other. first you tie 1 end about foot and a half past the other end. A simple knot will be fine there.. next you do the same with the other piece of rope.. you should have a rope that has 2 knots... add pressure and the 2 knots will come together, forming a solid knot that will not slip if done correctly.

while i'm probably not the best person here to say if you should retire the rope or retie the rope...
my first time wakeboarding was about a month ago and one of the guys we were with broke my friends rope (and binding but that is another story) i've taken rope tying classes for rockclimbing and scuba diving so i tied it back together as shown in the pic above (fishermans knot) after that i tied a normal overhand knot so as the rope is pulled the over hand knot would tighten around the fishermans knot.
it worked great for the rest of the day, but as soon as we were off the boat we retired the rope and bought another one.
and like someone said, if the rope snaps it comes flying back at the boat like a bat out of hell.
when in doubt, throw it out. _________________

In my college days (read: broke ass eating ramen noodles every day) we ran over my rope....okay I did it like 4 times. Anyway, I tied it together and it worked fine. BUT...those were the days when no stretch lines first came out and they were about as thick as your wrist. _________________ http://kmags.mybrute.com/

Johny_WA, where I retied it is at the end of the rope, so I just made the knot the exact same as the ones that were already in it.
jdmcivicman, like I said with dyneema it shouldn't snap back to the boat. It will probably come back a little, but only a few feet. If it was a ski rope I wouldn't even think of reusing it though. |

There would be absolutely no problem with tying that rope, if done correctly.
The problem for me is that I am swedish, but there is a not we call "pålstek" that I would trust holding my boat in a hurricane, as long as the rope doesn't break, the knot won't! The principle of the knot is that the harder you pull in the rope, the stronger the knot becomes so it would never untie itself. We use this all the time while sailing. A friend of mine actually got sent up in the top of the sailboat (like 30 feet from deck) trusting his life with this knot...
So there should be no problem at all...
This is the knot:

| The Bowline is indeed a great knot, Mike, but for joining two lines, the Fishermen's knot is definitely the one to use. |

As long as you tie it right, it will be fine. I rode with a tied rope(in ~4 places) from about last september untill last week. It took a few re-ties before we got it to hold, but it's been fine since then.
Wost case scenerio is that it doesn't hold, and you either don't get up, or it comes undone when you're riding and you sink. If it's low or non-stretch rope, it won' snap back since it can't stretch in the first place. The only time it would be dangerous is if it came undone in the middle of a trick. |

Ok, I thought it was a like 80 feet rope from the beginning and now it was chopped off so that the remainings were 65 feet and he thought that was enough anyways and therefore weren't going to use the last feet's of rope.
If that would have been the case, a bowmans knot would be great to replace the eye(?) at the end of the rope.

| Roos, that is exactly the case. I think I will untie it and use that bowmans knot. Right now I just used the same knot proline used, but it doest have the shrink over it, so it probably isn't as strong. thanks for the link |

Matt, as long as you don't need a longer rope, that rope will work just as well now as before. I'd trust the bowmans knot to be stronger than the original eye at the en of the rope.
No problem with the link, it's nice being able to help people and I learned what the knot was called in english, you see, I'm from sweden...
Cheers!
