I've been riding for while and would like to buy an instructional DVD.
Which one should I buy? Detention? Higher Education? or Waketrix?

Buy the Book, either the full set, or look at the individual ones they sell and get the ones that fit your ability.

I'm surprised to hear you say you liked Detention so much better. I think Detention is more entertaining, but as far as actually learning tricks The Book takes it hands down, with HE 2nd.
I like Detention and love the extras at the end, but Murray's descriptions of body position, grabs, etc fly by so fast I felt like it was tough to really get anything out of it. I also thought that it was not near as thorough as the other 2.

redhededstepchild, I got stuff out of it cause I can actually watch it with out falling asleep. Also the way the book explain a couple tricks is kind weird in my opinion.

Higher education is the best to me.

The book is second. Very informative but slow.

Detention is more fun to watch but not very educational.

Since you've been riding for a while, check out the last 3 DVD's of "The Book." The first two are better for riders who are just starting out (like me).

First off, I am one of the creators of The Book...so keep that in mind.

I agree that The Book is probably the slowest instructional. It was never designed to be watched all in 1 or 2 sittings. Trying to watch all of The Book Wakeboard Series in a day would be like commiting suicide (unless you are someone that REALLY likes wakeboarding). Our design was to create the most in-depth instructional out on the market. We wanted people to look at it as kindof like the "encyclopedia" of wakeboarding (hence the name "The Book"). It was designed so if you wanted to learn a Tantrum, then you can go to our tantrum chapter and watch the most in-depth instruction available on a Tantrum anywhere. We teach you how to do the Tantrum tucked-style, layout style, with and without a grab, on the trampoline, on the water, regular stance, goofy stance, from a front view, from a side view, etc.. For someone that isn't interested in doing Tantrums, this can get kinda boring. But for someone that is trying to land their first tantrum or master their existing Tantrum, those 10 minutes are priceless. Of course most people do watch the whole series (eventually), but remember that the goal of the series was to be the most in-depth, not the most fun to watch in a single day.

We didn't design The Book to compete with all of the other instructionals in the market. The other instructionals are competing with each other. They all are roughly the same length (90 minutes or so), and roughly the same price. We offer something different in the marketplace, for a different type of consumer. You can't compare a $29 1.5 hour instructional to a $99 8.5 hour instructional. They are two different beasts, that serve two different purposes. We do offer the titles individually at $29 to compete with the other instructionals price-wise, but still the content on one of our single discs compared to the content on the other instructionals is completely different.

Take Detention for example. I believe they feature over 100 tricks, and the running time is about 90 minutes or so (for both Volumes 1 & 2 combined). That averages under 1 minute per trick. Then look at our shortest DVD that we have..."Base Inverts". It averages about 8 minutes per trick. So, you see how it still doesn't compare. Even though they are the same price, they still serve different purposes. Detention has an advantage because it teaches you over 100 tricks, instead of just 8 basic inverts. But, The Book Base Inverts DVD single has an advantage because it averages roughly 8 minutes per trick instead of under one minute per trick.

So there you go... Two different types of instructionals for two different types of consumers.

IMO most instructionals are entertainment based. The book is the only one serious about teaching you anything.

I have Waketrix & Detention.I like to watch Detention because Murray is easy to watch. However, I would like a little more instructional.I fall asleep watching Waketrix because Shapiro is VERY monotone in his narration.

The BOOK DVD SERIES has been awsome if your looking for a teaching video to train you on how to do tricks step by step.

A lot of instructionals are more "edutainment"....a 1 minute clip of the trick with some quick verbage is not useful to me personally, I found quite a few of them pretty much worthless.

THE BOOK on the other hand is the most in depth instructional I have ever seen (for any sport)....they actually spend a great deal of time on the individual tricks and methods/approaches for learning....the side by side comparison motions on the trampoline are great.

If you actually want to learn something get The Book.

and on that topic, God bless Ipod Videos... Nothing like getting a quick lesson between sessions in the boat after getting tripped up on a trick. Of course only if you paid for the video! No pirates! ArRRrGG!
