Yes the sexless sport of soccer has relations with itself.
Keen observation skills Mr. Holmes.

I like the World Cup. It's one of my favorite sporting events and it's on my list of sporting events to go to one day.

I think most people's aversion to soccer isn't the game, it's the players. The flopping is ridiculous. I played lacrosse and wrestled in high school. I could have chosen to be a puss and fallen down every time I got checked in larcosse or screamed in wrestling (the ref will break the hold and restart you), but that's weak. Soccer players flop to get the call and that's f*ing weak. Some tackles can obviously put you down, but the blatant flops followed by the stretcher and a whole 3 minutes off the field only to return at full strength? Gimme a break.

how could you be sick of it unless you are a jobless, lazy piece of sht that has nothing better to do but sit at home and jerk off to Soap Operas and White Trash skanks on Jerry Springer re-runs all day long?
The games are only on early morning through early afternoon.....normal people don't even know it's on t.v. most of the time.

It's sweet. I'm watching Shana v Czech Rep right now at work and then I will watch Italy roll the US. I find a lot of sports that I generally don't have any interest in (namely NBA at this time of year) I get more interested in when the biggest event of the at sport is on TV or being played.

On a side note, GO UNC in the CWS!

K-dub, you should see those two drink together at the bar. At first it was just a behind closed doors relationship. Now they hold hands when they go to the bathroom together. You don't even want to hear about their sword fights. Rolling Eyes

liquidfool is Colorful . Wink Twisted Evil

Soccer was my sport throughout my youth, as was lacrosse. While the flopping is retarded, it's an art form that can help you win games. I personally think its funny.

But, you're right, soccer is the only game where you can act like a Taco Bell Chalupa and get away with it, but it is an agro and physical sport nonetheless. I've seen more fights and broken arms and legs in soccer than I have in all my years playing lacrosse or watching other contact sports.

Soccer is wonderful. Soccer is the game of the world. Soccer has the power to change politics.

All you need is a ball, and some kids to play. I have personally seen white/hispanic/black/rich/poor/athiests/fundy christians all play on the same team, be the same team.

There is no money barrier in soccer. Not like american football.

I don't know about changing politics. It can put a war on hold, but it ain't changing any policy.

Ghana was nails today - relentless. The US isn't going to make it out of group play, even with the draw today. Not with the -3 goal differential.

The US played damn well today. If they would have played that hard against the Czechs, they'd be in position to advance.

Eddie Pope is horrible. I find it hard to believe we can't find anyone better than him to play the back line.

I have never been a huge football (read soccer) fan, but do enjoy watching international games and the odd champions league/English premier league match. It cracks me up that you guys in the US think it's ghey because of all the flopping...yes it is rubbish to a degree, but ffs look at american football! You have about 4 different teams within a team because the linebackers are too fat/unfit/doped up to run more than five metres, and only one person out of say 40 can kick a ball, 4 out of 40 can catch a ball that is thrown by the quarterback, and the only running a quarterback does is on the odd sneak. (Now 40 is a guess of mine so please correct my number if im wrong. On top of that, they all have MASSIVE amounts of padding all over their bodies. And they only play about 12 games a season!!! Talk about soft.

Now I'm not getting at all American sports, basketball, hockey and baseball (to a lesser degree) require all round skills from the whole team, and I enjoy watching all of them. Hard to call soccer players soft in one sentence and then praise american footballers for being hard a$$ in the next...

jt09, there is still a chance to advance. Beat Ghana by more than the italians and the Czechs beat Italy. Common opponent then point dif right?

Laugh Damon, only the Euros!

Nor*Cal, I just think we'll have a damn hard time beating Ghana. For the US to advance, they need to beat Ghana anf then:

1. Italy defeats the Czech Republic.

2. Italy ties the Czech Republic 0-0 or 1-1 AND the United States beats Ghana by at least four goals.

3. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by five or more goals.

4. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by four goals AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Czechs do in their tie.

5. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is six or more.

6. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Italians do in their loss.

7. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores exactly two more goals than the Italians do in their loss AND the Americans win a drawing of lots by FIFA.

Jeremy Coe, you have to be kidding (although I know you're not). You obviously have no clue as to what American Football is about tactically - it can't even be compared in the same sentence w/ soccer. I call soccer players weak because they FAKE injuries to get calls from the refs.

I see you're from down under. If an ARF player pulled crap like that he'd be thought a puss, no? That's all I'm saying. After spending some time w/ skwake (an ARF player), I know damn well he'd never flop to get a call from a ref. In American Sports, especially in football, it's considered honorable to play through pain and ignore the small fouls. In soccer it's the opposite.

jt09, In ARF if someone flopped on the ground, an opposing player would probably stomp his arse to make sure he wasn't faking it Laughing Laughing Laughing and only then he just may get the call Wink

I played highshool and college and there are more injuries in soccer than any other sport. In college we did not have one uninjured player on the team I think the whole time I played.
I do hate when the men pretend like they are hurt. I think it is not just to get a call but to give everyone a breather.
I like womens soccer so much better because they play as a team, and none of this pretending to be hurt.

I've been following the games and I might just become a soccer fan. I wonder if that poor Italian bastard that scored our tying (and only) goal is now the Italy version of the Cubs' Bartman.

I dont like soccer to be honest, 1. as a spectacle and 2. because it threatens the true Australian football codes, Aussie rules and Rugby. It might sound weird but ill try to explain it.
We have always had Aussie rules and Rugby and then soccer to a tiny degree but all the soccer nuts are trying to make it the number 1 sport in Australia (they have a long way to go) and theres only so much population down here and not enough to support all 3 codes, and I would hate for Aussie Rules (my sport) to lose any fan base because a bigger money backed sport pushed its way onto the scene...
Ok try to Imagine the NFL going under because all the young kids switched to playing soccer instead of football therefore you had no players, supporters, tv rights etc. Not saying that would ever happen because your guys football is so massive compared to ours.
It still probably sounds weird to you guys but in Aus we dont have the big money behind our sports (the best players in the game earn max about $500k a year) because we dont have the big population.
So anyway I hope Australia get smashed in the world cup and we can all go about our lives and forget it even happened Smile
(ARGH I wish it was summer)

Soccer seems very....athletic but doesnt seem to have a very entertaining flow. Offense seems near impossible and defense seems pretty easy. Ive wactched a bit of this world cup thinking I would finally get it.....but I dont. I thuoght weatching Brazil play would be the equivelent to watching the 90's Bulls. I thought watching their superstar would be like watching Jordan. His attempts to score were just as random and lucky as anyone else. I cant see how anyone gets into this.

Now I dislike watching any sport that can end 1-0. but at least the other sports that can end that way have some other entertaining aspect. Some have more "moving parts" like baseball where theirs pitching batting, and fileding choices, etc. Others have spearate aspects like the fighting in hockey that make them tollerable. but soccer is nothing but kicking the ball around on a giant field.

So, if I were to fix soccer, it would be played on a field the size of a hockey rink, and the goalkeeper cant use his hands either. And fouls would be punished in some other fashion besides that gay card thing. Soccer games should end with a score of like 18 -14.

jason_ssr, You picked a bad day to watch Brazil.. They haven't been good so far.. When Ronaldinho normally plays, it's like magic.. Try to catch an Argentina game.. They look very strong and they won their last one 6-0.

soccer is a great game and is way misunderstood in america. Luckily its starting to grow. America played Italy really good, especially considering we were down 2 players in the last part. The refereeing was horrible and ruined the game. Eddie pope was asking for it though, he was fouling players left and right. The coach should have seen that and taken him out before he got his second yellow.

I'm not a huge fan of Soccer normally, but I'm getting into the World Cup... I went into the city last night (this morning) at 2am to watch Australia get done by Brazil... I aggree with some previous opinions though, the amount that the players dick around is bloody stupid...

So many stupid calls by the refs as well... I think the guy was on the Brazillian payroll Wink

I think that if we lived in a community where there were real soccer fans, we would probably like the sport more, as it seems that to some of these people, the sport is almost secondary to the comraderie, drinking, cheering, and hooliganism. Maybe we don't get it because we just don't have that vibe going here.

cameraboy, About hooliganism...that was what surprised me when I went to an NFL-game.. there were fans from both teams sitting with eachother at the same stand.. In most soccer leagues in Europe, that doesn't happen.. They keep fans pretty much seperated.. But as you say there is also alot of comraderie..

soccer is almost as boring as baseball. At least everyone is moving in soccer rather than the whole team just standing around.

IMO, the lower the score the more luck is involved in the game. In basketball you can hit 1 lucky shot but in the scheme of things it doesn't equate to much. In soccer/hockey you get lucky on a shot and that could very well be the game. It isn't normalized enough.

cameraboy, that's probably a big part of it.. the atmosphere.

Soccer isn't gay, but it is DAMN boring to watch on TV.

It is right up there with golf and baseball in the "boring on TV" department.

The World Cup is actually an awesome spectacle. I just can't stand to watch it.

Show me the highlight reel after the game, and I am golden. Cool
