have a friend push you gently from behind when you arent expecting it and have them take note of which foot you catch yourself with. that will tell you which foot should be your lead foot. as far as edging and going straight or the other way, someone else can explain that, im not good at explaining that sorta thing, lol

You riding with or without fins on the board? Without will give you a much more out of control feel (especially if you're just starting out)

I'm about a month into the sport now, so all the frustrations are still fresh on my mind.

Try to make sure the rope is on your lead hip, if you pull it to your chest the board will try to square too, making you edge to the left. Letting you're right hand go might help.

What size fins? How many? Larger fins should help you track better in the water and help you get the hang of it.

Keep pulling the rope and keep your hands in towards your hips. Don't hold your arms out in front of you and don't let the rope get too much slack. When you are up, place a little more weight on your back foot to dig the fins in and help you track straight. When you want to turn, look in the direction you want to go and lean slightly that way.

Before you know it you will be moving back and forth and eventually learning to edge on your heels and toes.

Here are some tips for general stability. As others have said handle close to your hips. Keep you hips forward and shoulders behind your hips, that gives you a strong position and leverage for more control. Don't break at the waist and bend over, always keep your chest up and back straight. Your lead hip drives you, point that hip in the direction you want to go. If you break at the waist then you have alot less control and stability and your hip won't be able to guide you properly. And just practice! Boarding position feels awkware to alot of folks when they first start...you'll get the feel for it soon enough.

I've got a question about the "handle @ hips" thing. Do you want the handle basically stuck @ your hip, or just at that height / in that general area? It seems like your forearms would be massively hurting if you pulled it in tight all the time.

As far as I know it just means to have it down close to your core around your hips. Just don't hold the handle out high around your chest I think is the general jist of that.

BeauCephus307, I ride for a wk at the end of July every summer at lake St. John in Fairaday accross from Natchez. You near there?
Anyway when I first started to learn to get control, When I wanted to go tword my healside I would lift my toes up and when I wanted to go toeside curl them down. Sounds stupid but is helped me to learn at firt because I had no one to teach me. It just makes you lean forward and back.
