So last night I fel asleep right after dinner and woke up around 11:30. Crap - I knew my sleep schedule was going to be jacked up and was already a bit grouchy about that, but I moved myself from the couch to the bed and flipped on the tube. Around 3am I saw a little shadow moving across my lower chest...I blew it off and figured it was just the shadows from the tv. Saw it again a couple of seconds later and looked a little closer this time -as the tv went bright again I jumped my scared a$s out of the bed and ran into the kitchen to grab something to catch the intruder. Here he is:

It's pretty small, but a tarantula is a tarantula. Little bastid was sizing me up, I just know it. I almost woke up looking like Frodo

Dpierce37, I didn't sream, but I did have somekind of verbal "Gahughayyy" type thing pop out. I was totally freaked the f*ck out and have no qualms admitting it in the least. F spiders!
Remember Kim, the hot blonde who lived next door? She had her leg in a brace from ACL surgery (after landing a huge tantrum out in the flats on Clear Creek - how bada$s is that?) and it took her about 5 minutes to get in her convertible one morning when she saw a HUGE (about 3x the size of this one) tarantula on the dashboard - she exited the car in about .8 seconds! We had to catch it for her and the sucka hid under the seats so it took us about an hour! She took it to work as her excuse for being late!
We do find them in the driveway fairly often, but this is the first time for one inside the house and it did a number on me - didn't quite sleep fully the rest of the night.

those suckers can JUMP, you mess around with them with a broom long enough they'll jump straight upwards about 4 feet, pretty badass.
Mermaid, come on, it isn't even that big!

jt09, me and my girl were walking around here apartment, and in the shadow of a tree, I saw a black mass, closer we got, the more legs it had...It was the biggest tarantula I had ever seen. She was screaming bloody murder at me to kill it (She is orse then you jt), I was like hell no, that thing was cool as hell! There are a bunch here in Texas, thats for sure!
Does anyone know if the one jeff saw is female or a differnt type of tarantula? Cause most tarantulas I see are pitch black.

jt09, spiders don't freak me out. But a fawker like that walking across my chest would have given me the heebie jeebies from hell. I can just picture the screams you made as you realized how big it was, and that it was WALKING across you earlier.
They are a good thing though. They keep other little nasties out.
Dpierce37, with many tarantuala species the female is larger and darker. That looks like it could be a male. Females tend to be more aggressive by the way. Go figure.

jt09, OMFG! I would've disgraced myself if that thing was crawling on me!
Some jerk I knew that had one as a pet. He let it out of the cage b/c he knew I was scared of it. The damned thing started jumping towards me, backing me into a corner - freaked me out! He finally picked it up when it got close & I lifted my foot to step on it...
Eewww! Now I have the heeby-geeby's!

You know if there was one in the house........there's gotta be more
They're great for cricket control, if you can get over the crunching sound.
Pretty harmless unless they're hungry.

in my 5 years in Austin, I was fortunate enough to never see one. I would have been in the hospital from the heart attack.... that or you would need a new couch from the mess that I would have left.

the hunter became the hunted.

The Brown Recluse is fairly common in Texas. My fiance was bit by one when she was a kid. They are more common in the outskirts of Houston where the housing sprawl has over taken the fields.

muckmeister, yeah - tarantulas and scorpions are pretty common in this part of Texas. I've seen probably 10 at this house in 5 years. Only one full grown - like jumalian said, this one is a baby. My dad's house in Bulverde (just N of San Antone) ALWAYS had a scorpion crawling around in the bottom floor.
Dragonlady8, NOT funny!!!

Dude spiders scare the hell out of me. I can handle snakes, but damn. Ryan got stung by a scorpion once and he thought he was going to die I've seen two in AR and that's enough.

Spiders don't really scare me if I see them before they are on me. If I feel them first though...I will scream like a school girl at an N*Sync concert.

jt09, dude effing tell me about it... Every time I head back to pops house right off Travis, I see like 10 on the porch at night... Wait till you crawl in bed, and you are sound asleep, and it feels as though someone burns you with a match on your leg... You throw the covers off, and spot a damn scorpion... They do in fact "rock you like a hurricaine." I am like you broseph, I dont do the whole wildlife thing that well... I quit hunting on our land in south Texas due to snakes... I dont care how many points a damn buck is there, between the snakes, spiders, and other ungodly critters, I prefer to stay in the city with the gangstas where I have a sporting chance at not getting harmed.

I effing hate spiders just as bad. I dont usually kill them but if one gets on me he will not live long.
We have what I call Jedi spiders here. They look like a mix between a Wolf spider and a Jumping spider. They look like a wolf spider but thiner, and they are REAL aggressive. If one's on the wall in the hallway it will jump on you as you walk by.
Talk about freaking out. I had one lower itself onto me as I was watching TV in bed one night. Came off the self above, I could see the shadow for a second coming down.
Ahh, not sure if I want to sleep now.

So now I am keeping this guy alive until next Wed and I'm giving him to a guy who has a ton of spiders/snakes etc. He's a reptile rescue type and I am going to take my daughter to see his snakes. Still pretty creepy having a tarantula sitting on the kitchen counter.

You ran across a harmelss Bananna spider. They are everywhere in Texas..they love building inbetween mesquite trees, and just hang out in the middle. They are great for target practice with your pistol

What do you do when you find those things, kill em? Then you have to clean up all their squishy guts, nasty. How bout a scorpion? Do tarantulas bite? WTF possesses a spider to freakin' jump on you? It's pretty damn funny that I'm scared of fiddlesticks that's so teeny.
Goddamn I hate bugs.

There's no debate about it. I walk into one of those things out int he woods and I'm going to have a heart attack. I would be muy harmed. Thus, said spider is NOT harmless.
dirtysparks, I've killed plenty of scorpions before. I usually only find dead tarantulas in the driveway and the ants are munching them. From what I understand tarantulas bite and it hurts, but isn't lethal.

dirtysparks, the most common scorpions arround here are harmless, and when I mean harmless, they are not the venomus kind...they sting like a mofo, little bit worse the a hornet sting.
Tarantulas rarely bite, but when they do, you will be hurting. They are not poisoness, but have fangs almost half an inch long!!!! My gf's Dad has one as a pet..crazy people.
I am most scared of the Brown recluse...plain fuking nasty critters. Bite doesnt really hurt, but if not treated, in a week you will have a fist full of rotton flesh under your skin.

In my opinion there is no such thing as a good spider, good snake, or good scorpion. I am so afraid of bitting and stinging insects that I am afraid to go to buy plants at the nursey for fear of being stung by a bee!!
