So I drove my motorcycle back from work yesterday and it was so nice I decided to tool around my area a little. I noticed that the temp was quite hot on my bike while I was stopped for awhile. I saw it climb from near the red line to the red line very slowly while I was stopped. I figured I would see if it cooled down while I was moving and if it didn't I'd stop and pick up my bike with my truck. It went down very quickly after I started moving. So, my immediate thought is I'm worried it has done this for awhile and I haven't noticed it, but I think I look at the temp guage pretty often, there is no idiot light when it overheats, you just have to see it on the gauge. I know I checked it on the highway on my way back and it was normal and I'm pretty sure that I checked it pretty often when traffic stopped on the highway for awhile because I could feel the heat. I know it gets hotter when it isn't moving so I try to make it a point to check the guage if I don't move for awhile. So, what do you guys think the problem was (scroll down for answer)?

You should have said cooling fan...This includes the cabling to the fan, the sensor that tells the fan to go on, and the fan itself. When I got home I checked the fan and it was indeed not on. So now I'm thinking this sucks, I bet it is a hassle to change that fan, maybe it will be the sensor which I think I could change by just taking off a fairing, but I'd still have to drain the coolant. I checked the fuse and found that it was blown and then I got my volt meter out and measured some stuff, it looked ok so I put a new fuse in. I could hear the fan hitting something and found that it was hitting this rubber thing that guides the airflow. I could also see that it had been rubbing for awhile because of the marks on the rubber and the fan, not too bad though. So I moved the rubber back and everything is ok again. I just hope nothing bad happened to the bike, I don't ever remember it running bad and it ran great after I fixed it and on the way to work today. How'd the rubber thing get in the way, you ask? Well, when I was lubricating the throttle cable awhile ago a socket fell into the engine area, I think my monkey paws pushed the rubber thing forward while I was trying to grab the socket...
