Erik, I am a bit biased on the Sony products. I bought a Sony Viao about 2 years ago and it keeps crashing. I Googled Sony Viao and there is a problem with the soldering of the motherboard. There are class actions suits all over the place about this and I reccomend buying an extended-extended-extended warranty if you make this decision. Sony told me to go Bubb Rubb myself when I called. So, I did what any logical person would do. Called Dell and got a great laptop for about $800 that will last me a while.

chavez, yeah i realize that, it was more an issue of dealing with dell afterwards.

I'll buy from the small business division next time, that's a good tip

Yeah Sony Vaio looks like it is out. Between what you have said on here and what a friend has told me... a Macbook pro may be in my future as well.

chavez, Jeff206,$.02 on the drives, Seagate is making stellar drives right now. Especially in the 1" platform, although that has little to do with laptops and the 2.5" platform, but all around they a making a good product.

When you buy a dell computer it comes with a maxtor. If you have a failure and they replace the drive they send you a seagate.

jryoung, yeah, I was just noting that it was the drive mfg and not Dell themselves.

Jeff206, it will save you lots of headache if you have a problem down the road... Trust me!!! Laughing

Broccoli B, that must be only in the business division, because the 2 HDDs I have replaced have been WD and Maxtor and they were replaced like for like.

The computers we have that are from Dell's SBD (Optiplex & Latitude & our server) have not had any issues to speak of.

The optiplex's that we have (about 200) they all came with maxtors, they have had a problem in optiplex 260, 270, and 280's with the SATA drives, they replace them with seagates. Dell has been great about it.

I just dropped $1500 on a new laptop and I am freaking out a bit. Never spent that much on one thing in my life. Hell, I have a 50" LCD that I only paid $286 for!!!

I got a HELL of a deal on a Dell Inspiron E1705 ( 17" screen!!! ) that retails at $2194. Used a coupon from apex for $750 off and ended up at $1563 w/ tax, delivered.

Not sure why I am posting this except that I am a bit freaked out right now!!!

So you don't have a boat?

Computers, technology, cell phones are all over rated! Nothing more than a P.O.S. tool used to do more work in the same amount of time. What people like about them is beyond me. I was more than a little dissapointed that Y2K didn't wipe all this garbage out.

I'm kind of a fan of technology. We were talking about it today. What did we used to do before the intranet? We used to work all day. Now, we work 2 hours during the day and the rest of time is spent playing around with our technology.

Works for me.

I fifth the sony comment. Sony sucks. Everything they make is actually worth about 65% of the price you pay. If you get something on sale then maybe.

I think the opposite. With technology your space is invaded constantly from all directions: email, phone, cell phone, faxes, etc. My brain cannot deal with 8 new e-mails while I'm talking on the land line while I have two more calls waiting. Often my personal and company cell phone will be going off at the same time. Our brains are working at warp speed. Mine isn't/wasn't designed to go that fast.

jt09, Know how you feel.......(yeah I'm bringing this post back from the dead)

I'm kinda stuck right now about what I need vs what I want.
Now that I've passed my recert exam and my Bday is coming up I thought about the new computer vs upgrading camera vs trading in SUV for newer model as a gift/reward to myself.

Technical- Well I'm still waiting to see if there are any issues for the Macs and the Nikon D200.
SUV- With the gas prices they way they are, that's not something I need to do right now.

So I just decided to drop some $$$$ on 2 new camera lenses instead.

I can always get the other stuff later.... I'm not going to die nor will my world come to an end if I don't have it right NOW. Wink

I just found a new most expensive purchase....

STEEL!!! Holy jumpin jiminy!!! I had to buy a shiitload of steel to re-inforce the frame, and rebuild the whole front chassis for custom stuff. I go and tell them what I need and how much.

Now mind you last time I did this it was about $250 for 3, 20 ft sections. I ask him the total, and it's over $600!!!!! I about crapped my pants!!

Thanks China for buying up the market. Evil or Very Mad

Gotta love Bay Area home prices, I look at the value of my piece of crap house and shake my head in disbelief sometimes. $1500 is about 1/3 of your monthly mortgage around here.

Just to update: My giagantascreen f*ing ROCKS!!!! As mentioned earlier, it certainly is to big to lug around on a regular basis, but I got the psuedo docking station for it and it will live at the home office 90% of the time.

Dragonlady8, go technical. You have a vehicle that gets you from point A to point B and with it's not like you need a snazzy new ride to pick up some guy who will take you to NYC just to look at dogs.

Well my main reason for a new ride was to exchange one of my rides to an automatic. It's a pain to own two manuals when you hurt yourself ( ie.... knee surgery Wink )

I did go technical this month.....finally did thet impulse purchase of the Nikon D200 kit with 18-70mm lens , f2.8 80-200mm lens, Canon 500D and a Power pack Embarassed
