(other than a car...or my education)

I just dropped $1500 on a new laptop and I am freaking out a bit. Never spent that much on one thing in my life. Hell, I have a 50" LCD that I only paid $286 for!!!

I got a HELL of a deal on a Dell Inspiron E1705 ( 17" screen!!! ) that retails at $2194. Used a coupon from apex for $750 off and ended up at $1563 w/ tax, delivered.

Not sure why I am posting this except that I am a bit freaked out right now!!!

I am about to do the same. I am getting close to pulling the trigger on a new Sony Vaio. So - I know what you are going through for sure.

But for some reason I thought you posted on here that you were a part owner of a sportfishing yacht? Perhaps I read wrong, but THAT sounded like your most expensive purchase. Either way, I will be feeling the same way in another month or two on my new laptop so I feel ya.

I was thinking the same thing.

Seriously, get something that has what you need and not too much else. Man do I hate that OEM crap they are putting on machines these days. Give me the OS and drivers only PLZ....

Dell Inspiron 710m
Dell Latitude X1

Inspiron can be had for sub $1500 depending on options. Just picked one up for my boss, it is one outstanding machine in such a slick little package.....

toshiba has a tiny laptop. i think fujitsu and dell has tiny laptops as well. whatever you do though, pay for the extended warranty, especially if you buy a laptop.

i'm sure sony products are good, they just scare me...it's preloaded w/ a lot of sony crap software and my friends sonys (he has 2!) are always sent in for repairs. (hardware issues, not software)

I've had nothing but problems with my dell laptop. first hard drive went within 8 months of purchase... and their "award winning tech suport" was no where to be found, just got sent around the block a few times.

I've heard good things about toshiba though

jumalian, I got it from work. Some idiot forgot to exclude new hires from a retention/incentive program tied to % of sales. As a new hire on a ramp quota, I only had to sell 25, 50 and 75% my first 3 months. I sold 130% of what MY quota was for all 3 months and got x amount of "points" that I could "spend" on the company website. I had 2800 points and the tv was 3086 - all I had to do was plunk down my credit card for the other 286 ponits (1pt = $1). Panasonic 50" LCD = $286....stand $324....DVD surround sound system $324...total set up $934.

Well F*CK!!!!!!!!! Since my debit card has a $300/day limit and this is such a big purchase, Wells Fargo halted the sale. I gotta find a friend w/ $1500 on their credit card who will buy it and see if Dell will still honor the price.

Save me the Dell sucks stories. They have great deals and I live in Austin. Breaking out a Sony here is like driving a Honda in Indiana - someone's getting knifed.

Pretty sweet setup:
17" mon
1.83GHz Intel Dual Core Processor
1GB mem
60 GB 5400rpm hard drive
256MB video card
MS Office Sm Bus Ed

I just started doing real estate appraisals so I needed a more powerful computer that is mobile as I'll be working from home and office.

A laptop with a 17 inch monitor. That is not portable at all.

Currently from dell you can get a Latitude D410 for about $1200 With the stats below

2.0Ghz
1 GIG ram
DVD Burner
40GB Harddrive
3 year at-home warranty.

jt09, ha ha I feel ya man!! Talk about buyers remorse. 4 years ago I bought my Jeep for 2K. That doesn't seem like that much, but considering it barely ran, had no brakes, chicken fiddlesticks all over it, and I used an egg crate box for a seat. Yeah I was starting to wonder if I was mental.

Broccoli B, I wanted the biggest one I could get. I'm not going to be lugging it around all over the place so 7lbs vs 5lbs isn't a big deal to me. At home it will be in a dock and hooked up to a 19" monitor.

Dpierce37, porn stays on the home PC. I've killed it enough to know that!! And no vids yet - I need a video camera though....gotta look for a bargain!

I know $1500 isn't a LOT of money, it's just the poor guy in me that won't allow me to buy anything expensive unless there's a great deal attached to it - see the TV above. I also have a problem parting with money when sober. Drunk is another issue. Hell, I should have just got juiced up when I made the purchase last night!!! Sh*t - I'd have bought 3 servers, 4 tvs, 2 cameras...same spending pattern as when I am drunk!

Called Dell and they'll honor the price for 72 hours, so I have plenty of time to get it straightened out.

Why the biggest one? You'll get the same performance out of a smaller one that is lighter and easy to carry around.

I'm just saying this because i bought a big laptop a while back and then regreted it with i had to take it somewhere. It barely fit in my backpack, and was heavy as hell. Didn't even fit on the tray table in the airplane.

Ok I have to ask this as 1500 bucks isn't a lot of dough.

Do you not own any furniture? I just Spent 5000 grand on a Sofa, love seat for the basement.

You really need to get more familiar with everyones friend. Debt! It's great, it allows you to buy stuff that you really can't afford. Smile

Broccoli B, I HATE small monitors. That's the honest answer. I wanted to be able to watch movies every now and then on a plane (going to CO in a couple of weeks and AK in a month or so) and as I said, I'm not going to be moving it every day. If it leaves the house more than 3x a month, I'd be suprised. I priced out the 15.4" version as well and with the coupons available, the 17" (with slightly better performace coming standard-very slight) was $10 less than the 15.4".

Bambamski, I know debt, and he's NOT my friend. He's bad debt, bad, bad debt!

Everything I buy, I but at a bargain. You asked about my furniture. My first set I bought from my ex when she moved to Australia - couch, chair, kitchen table, tv, dresser plus some other crap for $1000. My current set is a $1300 big ass couch and love seat and a $300 table - got both of those plus a 1 yr old dryer for $600 because my roommate was too hung over to carry them downstairs and put them on a trailer. Mr. Green

It's just how I do things. I get my wakeboards off of ebay, my vests and the like from wb.com posters with connections. I drink at bars where I get hookups, dances from strippers I know (so I get 2 for 1). I don't like buying anything full price. That's how I roll - cheap! All BS aside, I was truly poor for a loooong time but I have expensive tastes - gotta figure out a way for those two sides to coexist.

5000 grand. Damn, that is 5,000,000 bucks!

Jeff206, you realize of course that your hard drive is made by WD or Seagate, and has little to do with Dell itself.

Anyhow, next time if you buy from Dell, buy it from the Small Business Division - tech support on that side is good old American morons instead of those bad old Indian morons - at least you can understand the American ones! Wink

Ya Chavez I meant 5 grand.Shocked

I don't think I could even spend that much in Ethan Allan. do you have those down there.

I'm that way as well JT. I look for bargains anytime I can. I pretty much drink and eat out for nothing as most of it is expensed through work. When it comes to big ticket items though I usually buck up and spend the dough. It saves you money in the long term.

To the general forum. I'm not saying go out and rack up every credit card you guys have. Far from it. If you've had debt problems before it's better to pay cash for everything. However carring a little of bit of debt isn't a bad thing as long as it's manageable.

Debt lesson #1. Throw away every credit card you own and take out a line of credit. You should be able to get one that has a rate of around 1 or 2 percent over the bank prime. Link that to a credit card and you'll never pay 18% interest to Visa or Mastercard again.

Bambamski, I've already got horrible credit. Upside is that it's real hard to go any further in debt than I already am. Which isn't that much really - just a car note and a student loan. I have less than $800 in credit card debt over 2 cards. I pay them down and then use them when I need something - I just happend to be at a high point right now on them. I try to take out $100 chunks every month on each.

Just wait until you have a wife and kids. 800 bucks will be your weekly purchases...

On a good note, my wife got her first full time job ever last week. I think it's time for me to retire now...

I did freak when my first tax bill arrived, my taxes increased 75% which i just won my tax appeal this week. Good week.
