Hopefully you're taking lessons or some form of instruction from somebody 'cuz surfing isn't a sport that you could easily figure out on your own. Every summer I see tons of people trying to teach themselves to surf to no avail, you really need somebody to coach you on the basics.
Main things:
-Start off in the whitewater. Catching a wave is no good if you don't know how to at least ride in whitewater. This is the best place to practice your standup basics. Once you're comfortable with that THEN move out to the break & try to catch waves.
-When you're pushing to stand up it's IMPERATIVE that you push by your chest with your elbows up (like you're doing a pushup). More than anything I see people screw this up by pushing up near the nose of the board. This sinks the nose & makes you flip over.
-Don't lay too far back on the board. This makes the nose point in the air & turns the board into a big brake. You should be laying basically in the middle of the board (unless you're riding a shorty; hopefully you're not since they're near impossible to learn on).
That's all I can think of for now. Seriously, try & get a coach if you haven't already. |

i disagree with every1 in this forum, i tought myself to surf and i didn't Bubb Rubb around with the white water either, just paddle paddle paddle stand up then carve it took me a whole weekend to be able to ride ok and i used a 6'2" short board
get out there its the best thing i have every done, maybe better than wakeboarding?? _________________ In the water is where u will find me when i'm not working to earn money to pay to get out on the water |

Pretty much anyone that's actually surfed knows you're full of crap. Nice try responding to a thread that's nearing a year old though. |

I actualy tought myself, My dad told me the general principals and then we paddled out. he would like spot waves for me.. but other than that the only other tip I had was paddle at an angle away from the wave instead of straight away from it.
everything else i have learned from watching other people and trail and error... lots of error.
i think wakeskating helped a lot with balance and general wave carving principals. the hardest part was learning to ride front footed (weight on front foot) after that it follows pretty easy i guess.
Ive only been seriously surfing for like a year though so im still pretty neeeew _________________

Lots of people teach themselves to surf. Nobody ever teaches themself to surf out in the heavies on a 6'2" shorty, that's laughable. |

Jester's right. If you want to drown or get knocked out by a surfer or the ocean, that's a good way to do it. _________________ (insert funny chit here) |

flex639, there a lot of surfing opportunities in CT?
Just curious b/c I lived there last summer and am heading back in about a month for an internship, we couldn't really find anything to do in our free time, so we would just go to different cities on the weekends. (NYC, Boston, Toronto, etc.) |
