You have to be able to rip as hard as you can at the wake in order to make it over without a tower/pylon. I couldnt afford a tower for my families 18 foot bayliner so we got a pylon from www.bigairpylons.com it was only 285 dollars. It requires very little skill to install.
Where in NH do you ride? I ride on Suncook Lake in Barnstead.

Winnipesaukee, thanks for the tips!
I guess I still am a little scared to just haul ass right towards the wake, it resulted in 10 staples in my head once. But thats one thing I want to get down this summer is clearing the wake. _________________ From ice-out to ice-in, ride untill you fall out of your bindings.

HeyNHWakeRider,
Don't confuse raw speed with progressive edge....build that line tension!!! This whole "technique" deal is several things coming together at just that right moment so you'll FLY, you don't always get it right, but when you do , you'll know... when I was just learning, I'd haul ass at the wake and just bust right thru it without any air because I hadn't built any line tension (common mistake) by developing a progressive edge...YES, it takes practice, but in the end, watch someone who's good jump - they don't need excessive speed or a huge cut out, it's subtly done by building up that LINE TENSION as well as standing tall, etc.....
In the end, as I've said, SEVERAL things have to come togther to get a good jump...BTW, you can build a pylon for $100 - see my gallery for pics and go to Bill's (of Monster Tower fame) diytower.com website for my "how to"...however, if proper technique is used, you can get backrolls and tantrums behind what you've got....
You're correct, it is a beginner's mistake to be scared and what happens is you come off your edge just at the WRONG time...so don't haul ass, just cut out a bit and practice small FIRST, allowing all the forces to come togther for you (you're looking for "POP" at the wake), then take it BIG and you'll fly....have someone film you if you can.
Oh, another thing - don't even try for wake-to-wake at first, workj on that timing/technique/pop thing just cutting out a couple of feet (to the SAME spot if you can) then combine all of the elements of body position/timing and just go for the single wake jump...when you're ready for wake-to-wake, SHORTEN THE LINE to maybe 50' and MAYBE (careful here) speed up just a little (maybe 1 or 2 mph is all that's necessary)
So go ride

wesgardner,
Boy, that's really great advice for us beginners. Thanks a ton. _________________ But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions -- it is by grace you have been saved.

Hey burntorange77,
Yeah, it took me a LONG time to realize what I was doing wrong, like a dummy, I didn't take a lesson or ride with anyone better than me so I worked alot out by myself...havng since taken a couple of lessons (highly recommended) it's now coming together for me.
What I realized is how SUBTLE the differences between a good set-up and jump and a not-so-good one can be...I have since (with the aid of GOOD coaching) learned what to look for while watching others (and then can perhaps give them pointers if required) and what to think about (and practice) during my runs...
So this year, at the ripe old age of 53, I plan on nailing backrolls and tantrums - wish me luck!
Have a great season

| you probably dont get very far because you are jumping with your legs off the wake....take a progressive edge towards the wake once the boat already starts to pull you back towards the wake. Then stand tall aat the top of the wake and it should boot you pretty good. |

you'll get it man stick with it. i learned behind a 16 foot outboard and a jetski so i hear where ur comin from. take theadvice about technique and edging its the core of all wakeboard moves. i've seen quite a few inverts off no tower boats and even jetskis so no worries. work with it till you can step up to bigger better things. it'll just make your appreciation of a wakeboard boat all the greater when you get one 2 ur own. _________________ i drive a convertible. i have a boat. i wakeboard. word 2 yo mutha. dueces. |

| like typeRider, said youll be able to get some air if you take a progessrive edge and stand tall on the wake.......ive seen inverts in the flats so dont even worry bout that,,,,,get the basics done first. |

I am boarding behind a sunbird w/o a tower and did all last season as well, and I am just now getting my w2w down....It truly is all about the progressive edge, I spent all last season(my first season) trying to muscle my way into a w2w, and I wonder why I never got it. Then before this season I started asking these guys questions and hit w2w my second day out this season......However, we have a tower on the way now to bolt up to our boat, b/c it does really make a difference, I went behind a X-Star on Sunday and I had never boarded behind a boat with a tower and I took my normal edge(the one I use to go w2w behind no tower) and it scared the stuff out of me when I "popped" off the wake....Just stick with it bro _________________ It is better to be thought a fool, then to speak and remove all doubt. |

Donkey_Wakeboarder17, id on't mean to contradict but as much of a difference as the tower makes that x star prolly throws a killer wake aswell..i'm sure it'll make a dif and congrats on gettin one but don't think that was the main factor. i wish i could ride behind an x-star . i'm joining a boarder club here behind a tige 21boarder edition i believe... _________________ Smile at the hotties on the boat...Huck ur new trick...Nail it and they'll think ur Wicked..and even if u bail they can soothe u afterwards:D...

brath5, yeah the wake was sick, but what I meant more than anything was that it just felt like I was being pulled up instead of down.... But I am positive that the X-Star itself had a lot to do with it _________________ It is better to be thought a fool, then to speak and remove all doubt. |

i was riding without a tower when i started wakeboarding (about a month ago) then i tied up to the T-top on my boat and it was like night and day. It was easier to get up and when I jumped, it felt alot more stable in the air. I will never go back!!! _________________ I love the smell of napalm in the morning |

heck, i learned behind a waverunner. did nearly a full season behind one. for a lack of wake boats that would pull us. started getting across the wake (would case it a bit) then found a guy with a Sanger who would pull us. let em tell you, theres no bigger difference than going from a waverunner to a Sanger. the biggest difference i noticed, was acyually getting up. behind the waverunner, and im sure "no tower" boats, you get pulld across the water. with a tower, you get pulled up. much nicer, and a lot less strain on the arms.
as far as w2w, i can do it behind the sanger. waiting to try it behind my buddies '01 Moomba this year. |
