Hi guys, i have done a bit of reading about how to do jumps properly etc and i thought id just ask here as well as introduce myself.
My names Dave and im from aus and have just started getting into wakeboarding and im really enjoying it.
at the moment when im edging in towards the wake i tend to bend down and kinda "jump" at the crest of the wake, im getting huge air but at the same time it is kicking me off axis and im finding it hard to land.
what ive read so far there is alot of talk about "standing tall" and not trying to jump when hitting the wake...so in saying this is correct, to get massive pop i should edge hard into the wake and keep my legs straigtish and tight and not to "jump" and this will give me a cleaner and just as high pop? keeping in mind the wake from our boat isnt any special
also when i actually land the jumps i have realised ive landed them one handed, when i stack it i am normally holding the rope with two hands, would the fact that when i land it with two hands the board wants to go toeside towards the boat the reason why im stacking it? i guess to fix this problem is to 1. land with front hand or 2. when landing with both hands have the handle tighter and closer to my leading side waist rather than near my chest
thanks alot guys
Dave |

standing tall will give you pop, only if paired correctly with the progressive edge. it is extremely important if you are going to stand tall, that you do not allow yourself to come off your edge, this give all the line tension back to the boat, which is the opposite of what we want. the more effort you put into standing tall, the more you will have to work to keep from letting off your edge.
I think its best to not necessarily straighten your legs when you stand tall at the wake, but rather keep them bent the whole edge toward the wake, and as you're ridiing up the wake try and 'sink' your board down, (push your board down toward the bottom of the lake pretty hard) you wont ever submerge your board, but it will provide the very same downward momentum as standing tall in an attempt to harness the energy of the wake. this can be done without fully extending your knees, so you wont have to work as hard to hold your edge, and you still get the converging energy between your body's momentum and the energy of the wake. as long as you HOLD YOUR EDGE all the way throught the and sink your board at the right moment (hardest 'sink' at the top of the wake), you will soar higher than you ever thought possible. hope this helps. _________________ Mark Kenney, 1983-2002

SYNRGY_AUS, it sounds like you are having trouble with your handle position as well. Try to keep the handle around waist level and 12-14 inches away from your body. Also keep it centered with your body, you DONT need to have the handle pulled to your lead hip while you are in the air. This will give you more balance while jumping. You should be able to land with your left/right/or both hands without any problem.
You DONT want the handle up by your chest, and you DONT want your arms completely extended.

For starters, when youre coming in heel side, try to stay as stiff as possilble, with your elbows at your waist, or close by, directly infront of you....stand tall and keep this position while in the air and then absorb your landing with your knees. Be sure you keep the same progressive edge THE WHOLE TIME. This might look gay at first, but once you get the feeling of it you can really start to work with it loosening it up, add grabs and pokes and what nots...oh, and when you land, you want to edge out of the trick. Dont just let off your edge in the air, thats whats causing you do eat it up front. _________________ "I just want something more than to come home in my cool looking SUV, sit in my king sized leather recliner and watch reality television on my widescreen plasma TV...How easy it is to care for someone when you dont have anything else..." |

This is a problem I've had to deal with.
I have a problem with extending my legs, because when I do so, I usually let off my edge when I bring my board back underneath me. How do you keep your edge and stand tall at the wake? Maybe if I have my hips behind me and shoulders over my board, I could extend my hips at the wake and stand tall and be on balance, and on edge; however, I've heard it develops bad habits edging like that and you should have your hips out in front of you. So...how do you bring your board back underneath you to stand tall while also maintaining your edge?
Ok, thinking out loud. _________________ '05 Supra Launch 24SSV |

| I think you dont really need to have your board underneath you, just straighten out your legs in the position youre in. You are at an angled position in relation to the water, so just maintain that position and straighten your legs when you get to the top of the wake. |

i think standing straight just gives you more upward momentum so you go higher _________________

I used to have the same problem, heres what worked for me: on a heelside jump think about digging your heels in deeper when you ride up the wake as opposed to standing tall. |

STIFF? STRAIGHT??? UNDERNEATH YOU??
ah man this would confuse the hell out of me. dont make it too complicated. change small things when you go out.
Firstly before you go out practice the position with your knees bent and elbows in. REMEMBER to not channge this position all the way in to the wake. DO NOT MOVE AROUND. as you ride up the wake just start to resist a little more with your legs and not "jump". this converts the energy to "pop" its about physics thats why i think it can be hard to explain.
If its just an issue of flattening off before the wake then you can help yourself by..... people say "hold your edge" Dig your heels in" another easier way would be to "point your toes up towards your shins" this has the same effect and some understand a little better this way.
good luck. forums can be a really bad place for habits. once you have the RIGHT technique of wake jumps you will progress so fast its unbelievable.
wish you all the best |
