Posted: Mar 09, 2006 8:32 am Post subject: CHECK OUT OUR TURBO DIESEL XSTAR |
|
|
We have put together the ultimate wakeboard boat. This 2004 XStar has a Yanmar 315hp turbo charged diesel engine. We loaded an extra 3,265 lbs. of ballast into the boat and timed how long it took to reach 23 mph with a rider behind us. It jumped up and hit 23 mph in a brief 19.8 seconds. I would challange anyone who can beat that time with that much ballast weight in their boat.
Your gas boat probably burns between 9 to 13 gallons per hour if your trying to create an ample sized wake. You can expect to burn only half that with a Yanmar diesel engine. I'm seeing $$ dollar signs now. When you go to the pump and fill your 57 gal. tank with gasoline you'll get about 6 hours of riding that will cost you somewhere near $136.80 @ $2.40/gal. midgrade. Now imagine this, when I go to the pump and pour in that 57 gal. of diesel fuel I'm going to get about 14 hours of ride time for $142.50 @ $2.50/gal. That would cost you $296.40 to run your gas boat for 14 hours. Sounds crazy doesn't it? So now the $176.70 I just saved in fuel consumption can be used to make my monthly boat payment of $550.00 if I decide to fill up a couple more times a month. Basically your boat is paying for its self. Need I say more? |

smooth svenska, that's pretty slick! What is the performance like without ballast? How loud is the engine at cruising speed? Pretty awesome though...IMPRESIVE! _________________ Riders Inc. |

Thanks. Just to let you know, we didn't have to make any major modifications repowering this boat. To answer your question, we ran it against another XStar with the 385hp GM gas engine and all the speed tests were very close. The gas boat ran a top speed of 39.4 mph and our diesel boat ran a top speed of 38.9 mph. We also tested acceleration and the gas boat only beat us by 1.5 seconds with no ballast. As soon as we loaded the boats with ballast the diesel boat spanked the gas. You know how your gas boats bog for a bit when you add weight to them. It is cool to watch when the turbo kicks in on the diesel and the boat launches with ballast weight. |

Hey Smooth svenska, That's really cool! However, I have one question for you in regards to the savings. How much did that conversion cost you and does that reflect in the boat payment? $550? |

The diesel engine does cost more up front. Depending on which boat model you buy, loan term and what interest rate you can get on your loan that monthly payment could be lower or higher. When you buy a boat your going to ride and the fuel you burn will add up at the end of each month. So your monthly budget will have to include your boat loan and fuel expense. And like I said, it might cost you around $300 to run your boat 14 hours each month. But for me it will only cost around $145 to ride 14 hours giving me the extra money to put back into the boat loan. |

We repowered this XStar ourselves. Mastercraft does not offer this engine yet so I don't know how much they would charge. Although Session boats put the Yanmar diesel engine on their price list so you could as them how much they are charging for this diesel option. |

Let's just say that the motor swap set you back about 7k
7000/ 176.70= about 40 fills of gas before you break even. or about 555 hours. (40 fills time 14 hours)
It's cool to see the innovation, where are you from? _________________ wakeboards

its a great idea, but i wouldn't perform the swap unless i had somebody ready to buy the gas engine |

you, uh, should use biodiesel with that. you're given a great opportunity to do something nice for the environment, i'd take advantage of that |

That looks pretty cool,
But I can't remember ever seeing a diesel pump at my local lake marina.
I'll have to check next time.
looks good though. _________________ let's ride! |

logan, He does have a point though. If people were exposed to a working model biodiesel powered diesel engine and saw first hand the expense up front, and how its fueled and how little it costs to fuel it....I bet it would turn some heads, and might get a few diesel/biodiesel pumps at the marinas. I would love to see that. I wonder if any of the larger boats run on biodiesel at all?
smooth svenska, thats really impressive!! Good for you for going in that direction, the industry definitly could use some more of your intiative. I am curious to know what kind of roadblocks or obstacles you came across in converting from one engine to the other?
For some of the every-day riders, this upgrade could easily pay for itself within one years time. |

I suppose its nice if you trailer your boat all the time. Mine stays in water all season long, would be a huge PITA to go get the fuel for that thing.
Pretty cool though.
Edit: Not resizing pics is painfully annoying. |

smooth svenska, Good call and good work on the math It's good to see diesel being put into boats..
als132 has a point. Running on biodiesel would be a cheaper, and being that diesel isn't too environmentally friendly, b.d. would be awesome... Now just wait until we get those fuel cells _________________

That's pretty innovative for a wakeboard boat. Thanks for sharing it. If you're in a rural area you might check around to see if you can purchase agriculture diesel it's about 50 cents cheaper per gallon because you don't pay the road taxes on it. Depending on where you get it ag diesel may have a higher sulphur content. |

did the diesel motor add any weight to the boat? and how much?
great idea and there needs to be more thinking in this direction. |

qnev - that's what I'm sayin... I want a fuel cell boat too! especially if they can make it run backwards and convert the water into hydrogen imagine the unlimited fuel supply! or just the idea putting nothing into the water except for more fresh water isn't bad either. Too bad it's a technology that's minimum 10 years out. |

oh baby that would be sweet,
ide love to have the whole lake as my fuel source water goes in, hydrogen is seperated and used as fuel, then it goes right back into the lake, neverending supply! |

People have been doing this with cars and motorcycles for 20years in using water as a source of fuel, but supposedly the Oil companies have been killing these people off. Look into it... _________________ Neuston Boards
