Modding an XBOX

Alrite, i know a sound kind of like a nerd by asking this question, but has anyone ever done this or had a friend who did this? I was thinking that it would be cool so i could rent games from blockbuster and then save them to the xbox and play them without paying all that money.

they had a special on it on the screensavers on techtv. you may wanna check their site and do a search they said on the show they would have all the info. Very Happy

Yeah, i saw that, but those guys do that kind of stuff all the time. Of course its easy for them, i wanna hear from someone who doesnt do this stuff for a living.

Even if it's like $100, it's definately worth it. I'm would get one, but you can't play on Xbox live with one. My friend somehow ruined his PS2 trying to mod it himself.

I have a xbox and have shopped around online for mod chips- here is the quickest synopsis I can give, hope its accurate..

For $30-40, you can order a mod chip that you solder to a series of pins on your xbox motherboard, it will add tons of features like the ability to play burned cd's (dvd, svcd, vcd, cdr, etc..) It also overrides whatever disables the DVD player, so it will activate the DVD player without paying $30 for the dvd playback kit. The flip side is adding a mod chip apparently kills your LAN capabilities, so you won't be able to play XBOX live. Do the research and make sure its worthwhile, you will definitely void your warranty if you solder something to the board so make sure you know what you are getting!!

Post any noteworthy info you come across.

and you can still play online with other programs, and with a different program than xbox live you can play halo online!

Yeah, gamespy arcade works I believe. Xbox Live is much better though.

You should still be able to access XBOX live with a modchip installed in you XBOX.

All you need to do is install a switch with the chip to turn it off. This will then activate the XBOX bios and you can then run it as an unmodded console.

We do those installations here for only $55 plus $10 for the switch....

50 bucks to put one in? i did it to all my friends for free. if a fellow wakeboarder asked me to put one in for them i would do thiers for free too.

Yeah it is, isnt it? I was reading up on some economic theories about hypothetical societies where everyone each does there own thing and then everyone just shares. It sounds good on paper, but then in real life it doesnt work. Its called communism. So i guess our economy isnt so bad after all.

Also, from the look of things this guy is in Australia meaning 50-60 bucks AUS is really 25-30 US which is very reasonable.

I think they ship their chips from the US anyway, so surely SOMEONE over there would do it for you.

Just to put it into perspective, an XBOX game costs $99.00 AUD here, so if getting it chipped costs $60, then you need only copy 1 game and you have made you money back already.

I just had a side though... I am very much against pirating CD's, but I couldn't give a toss about pirating games... I wonder why this is?

Actually I have about 5 (That you burnt for me) and about 2 from Shaun, but I have gone out and bought real copys of the ones I though deserved the cash (aka Anathema's 'Fine day to exit' and the Testeagles)

Another (Obsolete) is one I had stolen TWICE! and figured I wasn't paying for it again.

And the rest are ones I can't find anywhere else (I had to go to Melbourne to find Anathema!)

So yes, I suck. What I should have said was 'I don't care if other people copy CD's, but I like to reward the people who create the music I listen to'.
