|
|
I helped a friend build a custom tower for his ProStar 205 last weekend, now granted his folks have a very nice shop so he has full access to a tig welder, plasma welder, bender, lathe, etc.., but the end result only took about 2 days of labor (3 of us) and $300 worth of steel. Its 2.25" stainless, it still needs some polishing. It sits at an angle, it was designed to be parallel to the water at riding speeds.
It is removeable, the bolt shoots through a ball socket, then it threads into a cut piece of solid stainless steel rod that was tapped and tapered on the ends. There is a heavy steel plate on the inside. The connector bolts shoot from the inside out so they are hidden, I think it looks real clean b/c all you can see is the tapered steel ring on the outside. It weighs about 100 lbs total. It stands maybe 74" off the deck, its a good 18" over standard towers. It still has great stability, we have taken it out 3 days already and it is solid as a rock.
Email me if you want more details or specs, I will get him to fill you in.
And DEFINITELY email me if you are in the Tennessee area and would like to inquire on a custom build, this was their first project and they have some new killer ideas. Every single measurement, bend, and thread turned out perfect, these guys know their stuff!!!

Nice JOB !!!
I would recommend adding a Jam nut between the rod end bearing (Heim Joint) and the machine peice welded to the end of the leg. It will lock this down and prevent any noise. May not be a problem though.

We bought a boat at the end of last season. It had a tower similar to yours. except 2in steel instead of stainless... anywho... it was about the same heigth as your and the welding was pretty sloppy so we have spent the last two nights grinding down the welds and shorteded it by 12 inches. Takes alot more time than expected. WHat will you guys do for a binim??

Hey thanks for the comments! We still have to work on a bimini, board racks, front/back lights, and at least 400w of speakers. It would be a lot easier to use a credit card and be done with it, but making everything a proect makes it a lot more fun, and a LOT more economical.
dees, the tie-off is Tige' style, its on the bottom of that plate. I wish I had a better picture of it. The tower sits so high, and it leans at a pretty steep angle before takeoff, so its kinda nice to have the tie-off on bottom so you don't have to climb onto the inboard to hook the rope on top.
MonsterTower, thanks for the advice, I sent him this URL and he agreed that it could help. ps- the new black tower is stylin!!!!
