I don't think planes will help with rail guns.
The Government may be able to help with a linear accelerator.

| Uh, so you've solved the power source issueu for a linear accelerator? That is what a Rail Gun is, a magnetically accelerated bullet.

| A buddy of mine found a deadly site on the internet that had step by step instructions and formulas on how to build a rail gun. Apparently this rail gun was like 100 feet long and could turn a small tank inside out with a bullet.

yeah, rail guns r a little tough to make....i dont know if its even legal to make one, even if its just a tiny one. and like leggester said, power is big issue....d@mn accelerators eat lots of juice. as far as plans go, the movie ERASER had a nice little 3d animated model of it in the movie, but with no description of parts...but that was rifle-size.

Well, first you need to make a big magnetic field. Then, you need some rails for the "rail" gun. Put the rails at 90 degrees to the field. Now, you need to get a metal that will turn into a conducting gas and/or a metal bar that can slide down the rails. Put some power to the rails and the bar or gas will slide forward, pushing your projectile out. Make sure you orient the magnetic field the right way, otherwise it will shoot backwards.

last year we spent a hole month on rail guns in electronics... i think i can help.
You will need to start off with some coils. The more coils you use, the faster the rail gun goes. The magnetic field of a coil, when turned on will pull a magnetic object (bullet) to its center. So a rail gun nees to pull the bullet to its center, and right before it gets there needs to be shut off. That way the bullet wont be stoped in the center, and will continue to go onto the next coil. The tricky part is going to be getting this timing right. And also makign a good switch that will allow you to do so. Attached is a very crude scamatic diagram of what one may look like, if you want to base is off of that.

| Bulding this isnt really worth it, if you really want to fool around with a coil, i would recomend using a tazer, which has to deal with the magnetic lines the coil produced when power is applied, and them collapsing back .

| It should be. That was my guess. Other than someone not understanding what they are getting into.

| chales, who is that question directed towards? what i have contributed is true. my electronics teachers is cool, even though we dont build them... he tells use how to and what not to help us relate stuff to something we can become intrested in. The only thing we have ever built in the class that could be considered a weapon, were very low powered tazers.

Ryan_m,
That's not how a rail gun works. They are not that hard to build, but they are not as cool as you'd think. Here's a very crude picture. On the left side of the picture you make a magnetic field going up and down. You can do this using coils, to make the field more powerful you can put something in the center of the coils, like iron. Now, on the right is the top view. You have the rails (thus railgun), and the bullet. You apply a voltage to the rails and whatever is connecting them will have an electromagnetic force. This could be the bullet itself or a conductive gas behind the bullet.
If you put 20 amps through a 200 wrapped coil with an iron core that is .5 m long, you can make a magnetic field of 2.01 tesla. If you put the same 20 amps through the rails and the rails are 30 mm apart, you'd get a force of only .12 Newtons (.027lb). A weaker typical gun will put out 363 N (81lb) of force. The above example is probably about the best you could do, if you increase both the coil current and rail current to around 1000 amps you'd be close to the force of the weaker gun.

They supposedly had one in Eraser. You guys are seriously thinking this is more technical than it really is. Basically it is using magnets and electricity to shoot something.
They are easy to make, it is just hard to make one that would be better than a normal gun.
