Waker4, it's very fun and very addicting... It is different from wakeboarding and may take a little time for you to get used to the feeling of not being strapped to the board, but IMHO it is worth it. Shoes help a lot, and you can use old skateboard shoes, they will work fine (but may get a little heavy/moldy in the water). If you don't mind, I recommend drilling some holes in the sole of the shoe so that they drain better and make sure you clean them out and dry them properly every once in a while if it starts smelling really bad.

As for decks, look for products made by Cassette/Kampus/Sattelyte/Distortion/Gator/Oak each of those companies have quality beginner decks that even pros still use.

If you don't mind shelling out some more dough, look at the high end versions of those companies and check out Integrity and Omen.

Websites of those brands:

Places to buy these boards:

Check out http://www.wakeskating.com (the sister site to http://www.wakeboarder.com) you can get a lot more information over there.
