I was wonder if anyone has bought or surfed their boards. I am going to try to convince my parents to buy me one for christmas/my birthday cause they are kind of spendy. I am not really sure what size I should get. I am 17 years old. about 6 foot 190 lbs. My surfing ability is a beginner. I've surfed only a couple times in hawaii and many times behind my boat. I am thinking about getting a 6' 4'' to 6' 6'' size fish. I will be surfing mostly summer surf at westport but I will try to surf year round. My parents wanna go as cheap as they can. They might even try to buy off ebay. If any one knows of any cheap shapers let me know. _________________ www.nationsfoundation.org

That board's probably gonna be too small for you. If you're set on going shortboard I'd say at least a 6'8" for now, maybe bigger. Learning to surf is ALWAYS easier on a longboard and I always suggest that people rent one and learn the basics on that before going to the shorty.
Go to your local shop and see what kinda deals they'd be willing to cut you. Many shops have used/consignment boards you can get for cheap. |

Getting up on a shortboard is entirely more difficult than on a longboard, don't count on it being a walk in the park.
Fish are designed for small waves, but they come with their own set of challenges. They're faster down the face and hence more difficult to control. If you ride waves that throw top to bottom you usually hafta drop in later, which requires good drop in technique (something beginners don't possess). |

get a 6'4" fish with a lot of rocker in the nose. That will keep you from pearling when you take off late. It'll be fast enough to get past the closeout sections and still fairly easy to ride. I've got a buddy down in Cocoa that shapes, and you can usually pick em up for around three hunde. |

Not a bad board for learning the shorty. The 80's style thrusters have about 3 inch rails so they catch waves easier and are a bit more sturdy than the modern potato chip shape. Gonna be a bummer learning to duck dive it.
The trac pad on the front needs to go though.
A) It's not placed well
B) Nobody but Christian Fletcher rides with trac pads at the front & even he's not popular enuff to make it cool. |

After shaping several of my own boards and knowing that you are pretty much a beginner, I would follow Jester's advice or if you are partial to getting a shorter board, suggest going with a fun board or egg shape. Shorter for learning how a short board reacts, but wide and thick enough so you can catch waves a bit easier. _________________ (insert funny chit here) |
