PostPosted: Sep 21, 2005 10:50 am    Post subject: Cop CAR pulls us over on lake!! Reply with quote

Ok, so heres the story, yesterday a few buddies and i went out on the lake for a few sessions. Everything was going great and it was still early enough so the water was glass and barely any boats are out there. So were boardin mindin our own business and all of a sudden a cop car pulls up to the launch and rings his sirens and says on the megaphone "Hey, you wakeboarders on the malibu, if you dont come to the dock now i will send a boat after you". So after a few mins, we finally give in and go to the dock (i was in the water at that point) and so i drift the boat into the dock to find out it wasnt the DNR but an F-ing sherriff, which rudely said "Hey, do you even know how to drive that damn thing" as i slowly parked the boat on the dock. I was insulted at first so i responded "Well, clearly you are a sherriff and not the DNR, do you even know how the hell a boat floats?". So i guess we got up on the wrong foot there. Soon, he goes, well this isnt your problem, you werent driving so bud off. as i told him it was my boat and he just seemed not to care. He took my buddy and said, "Is it necessary to play the music so loud so that everyone can hear it" and so he said yeah, thats what its for its so the wakeboarder can hear it. So the officer proceeded to say, "why dont you just get a WALKMAN" so we giggled and my bud said "theyre not water proof". By then the SHERRIFF was ticked off since he clearly didnt know what the hell he was talkin about. He didnt even know how to tell me how loud, or at how many decibels i could play my music legally. he simply said "well in a car its 60 yards, so in a boat i would say about 3 boat lengths" so i smirked as i asked him if he honestly knew what he was talking about. Soon, my buddy got a fine on MY BOAT because he was driving. The citation was not for a noise violation of some sort but for misorderly conduct. Well, finally the cop attempted to explain himself and said "You guys have to understand, with the sound of your engine, and your music, the sound of the wind and if YOU GUYS JUMPING it all adds up and people complain" man did i almost burst out laughing when he said we made alot of noise jumping, but i held it in. Well, once he left, we blasted the music again....and soon after headed home with a $154 fine!!! So for all you wakeboarders out there.....either play music, or jump, both dont work together, jumping makes too much noise! Ridiculous!

Maybe if you spoke to him like adults instead of smartasses he wouldn't give you such a hard time? Now instead of just apologizing etc... the cops are gonna remember your crew as the 'jerks in the malibu' whether he made stupid comments about loud jumping or not.

Working against the cops won't get you anywhere.

I'd say you got what you deserved. Hopefully, more respectful wakeboarders in your area won't get screwed due to area restrictions based on a few bad apples.

Disorderly Conduct, take it to court, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

The cop will have to show up and explain himself, you guys can all be there as witness'.

The charges were against one person in the boat.

I can only assume the Judge would throw the case out or reduce the fine/charge as it's pretty ridiculous.

I dont think it's ridiculous at all. Disorderly conduct is a very broad charge. The officer could say that it was for being insubordinant or any of a number of things.

Quote:

Well, clearly you are a sherriff and not the DNR, do you even know how the hell a boat floats?

I doubt that that comment will help his case.

Quote:

giggled

this either.

Quote:

i smirked as i asked him if he honestly knew what he was talking about.

nor will that....

Quote:

blasted the music again

And some of us wonder why a big steryotype is that we have no respect for anyone...

Basicly he completely disrespected the POLICE OFFICER. Generally a bad idea.

So if you were trying to sleep in the morning and some guy drives back and forth cranking his stereo in front of your house - that would be OK with You????

Hopefully you will learn a little consideration by posting this and seeing the responses.

yep, showing disrespect will never get you anywhere with the law. One time I was driving down the road (we were moving a half mile from apt to apt in college) and neither my roommate or I were wearing a seat belt. As the cop pulls us over my roommate slipped his seat belt on. I didn't, just kept it off because I knew he could see. Well my roommate smirked when the cop said that he noticed my roommate not wearing a seat belt. Wrote my roommate a ticket and not me even though I wasn't wearing a seat belt the whole time. Needless to say my roommate was pissed.

The cop clearly abused his power for whatever personal reasons
However mouthing off to him, even if he is wrong or a moron, is just plain dumb = fine every time.

Just say yes sir, no sir, suck it up and try to get out of there with no fine.
Or go to court and tell the story, explain you are aware of the rules of the water, feel you were being sterotyped and see if the judge gives a crap Smile

Riding a Parks+ favorite trick is a Raley+18+Parent's boat+High school diploma (maybe)= spicychalupa69 giving all of us a bad name.

Maybe next time you won't think you're so cool. You're just giving fishermen, coast guard/lake authorities, and lake front housing communities more ammo when you act like that. It's already known that we aren't liked...for the obvious reasons that we love huge wakes and those wakes mess up shorelines and fishing. The loud music doesn't help either...but being a jerk on top of that just gives the rest of the people we SHARE the water with more reason to hate US...not just you. Had I been the cop I probably would have waited at the dock, after giving you the ticket, with a breathalizer in hand praying that you and your buddies had been drinking.

It is the same think that happens to skaterboarders....they go some where to skate and getted hassled by the police...then the skaters bitch about it...but usually they (the skaterboarders) were probably trespassing, they are usually grinding on stuff, and sometimes putting on grinding wax on stuff...so basically they are trespassing and vandalizing property.....

Wakeboarders on the other hand usually get harassed by lakefront property owners, cops, and the DNR. Wakeboarders usually have large wakes that erode shorelines, can damage docked boats, and almost submerge smaller vessels...leading to property damage. Along with this wakeboarders often play extremely loud music (noise violation, disorderly conduct)......

I have been both a wakeboarder and skater....we usually ARE doing something wrong if the cops come....you just need to be polite and take your deserved punishment....that is just the way it goes.....you can't plead immunity fromt he law because you happen to be particpating in something you enjoy

However,
sometimes the cops, DNR, or lakefront owners, etc....are unjustified in their complaints or citations.... in those situations you need to determine whether it is worth giving your boat, your wakeboarding crew, or wakeboarders in general in bad name by taking necessary action...Sometimes it is...but I think if you get a citation that you don't agree with the best solution is to try to get it thrown out...if you get in a situation with angry fisherman, lakefront property owner, crew team, swivel ski team, etc....then sometimes you need to resort to harsh words and fistacuffs....use your discretion in that situation

cops are assholes. i hate them. i just avoid them the most i can. i agree that smarting off to him was a bad mistake, but i don't really blame you that much since he was being such a jackass on how he drove the boat.

but everyone else is right about people like you giving us, the wakeboarders, a bad name.

While chalupa did dis-respect the cop, the cop had no right to throw the first jab accusing him of not being able to drive (he prob did this to instigate the ticket). I am fine with playing the games cops like to play but it gets pretty old having to constantly bow down to someone with less knowledge but more authoritative power. It sucks that certain authorities abuse their privilege to the point that should you defend yourself it becomes "misorderly conduct". When I was young I mouthed off to cops learning the hard way, like most people I know. Just know when to say when Chalupa and give the man his five minutes of superiority. I would not play loud music early in the morning; that is probably what created the issue.

We were out at Calero the other day talking in our boat with the stereo on and were told our music was too loud? WE WERE TALKING OVER IT!!! I guess the sheriff had nothing better to do than bug us.

The cop had NO reason to even do what he did. First, he started off by being a an a$$ ( i for one, do not stand for that even if its a cop). Yeah i think being a smartass was bad, but come on, i bet half of you would be pissed of cause you know the cop was just trying to do something. I really hate cops that thing they can abuse their power. I hardly have a run in with the law, but a few months ago i got pulled over for my tint on my car. Yeah i know its illegal, but the cop was an A$$hole right from the start cause he saw a young adult in a new Audi.

Anyways, next time talk to him maturely and dont be little kids.

ontrider, I cant find what your point is here? For the record i was not in anyway pissed he pulled me over, i could care less that he pulled me over or the fine. All my cars have tint. My point was that cops can be real dicks. Whats that saying they have on their cars? To protect and to serve?? If they serve, they could at the VERY LEAST show a little courtesy. If they loosen up a little bit maybe they would be a better response Question

Think about this for a second:

Why was the cop there in the first place? It's not often a cop comes down to the docks if they are not patrolling the water, I bet a homeowner called the cop with a noise complaint.

Look cops suck,
they abuse their power,

but when are ya gonna grow up and learn people.
Get used to it!!! Be humble and polite and they'll harass someone else.

Regardless if the whole situation was totally stupid, learn to shut your
friggin mouth, sometimes you have more effect with less said.

Centrider, there are jerks in every profession. You should give them a better response in the first place and if they're a dick, deal with it later. It's not going to help your situation in the least to get smart with them right then and there.

And my point was that you stated your car's tint is illegal... and that you were well aware of that fact. If you KNOW it's against the law and you're going to blatently break the law anyway, then you should expect some cops will be dicks, it comes with the territory. In his mind he probably sees some young punk with $$$ that thinks he can do whatever he likes, so he's gonna rag on you if you give him the chance!

Discounting all that though, it's his job to enforce the law and you're breaking it.. simple as that.

My .02, it was a funny story, Chalupa, thanks for sharing. But you should have been more respectful to the cop.

Bowen, I'm glad to know that the fact I have a Parks and like raleys adds up to me being a donkey. I hadn't figured it out from the thousand other posts where people knock on both. Wink

First off every place i've been to don't say it is illegal to play loud music after 6a.m. Another reason that he was a dick to you in the first place was because you was young. So i would have been a smart ass to him. who cares if it gives us a bad name you will still be able to ride. SO most of yall need to quit bitchin about this!

Well guys, thanks for all the responses. And to those who responded negatively and were an ass right of the bat just like the cop, i guess you misunderstood my story. I have never in my life been disrespectful to a cop. I just thought it was rediculous how right off the bat before i was even able to say "what seems to be the problem officer" he insulted me. Another fact, what i meant by being early was that it was a weekday and it was stil early enough that people were not out of work yet therefore there were only just a few boats in the water. Ive been pulled over three times this season and i have not disrespected the DNR once. the first time i got a warning for sitting on the beach and starting from there. The second one, the same DNR officer who issued me the warning felt a need to search my boat since we had coolers, he found nothing. And then this time, i just thought that it was rediculous. Bowen, just for the damn record, i am 18, i just started my first year of college, and i bought my own damn boat last season and i work 6 days of the week just to pay for it, so it isnt ''daddys'' boat. I suppose i wasnt expecting those kind of responses but its ok, just letting you know that im not one of ''them'' wakeboarders that are assholes to cops or other boats.

I mean, we are closer to the last than being the first boat that plays loud music on that lake, but as the officer said "its just not your lucky day now is it"

ontrider, I agree with a bit in the fact you have to deal with what comes if you know your breaking the law, BUT, the officer(s) can be just a LITTLE respectfuly. I guess you havent run into any "dick" cops, but once you do....you will know what we mean. They are the ones that should set an example. Also, here in Cali, anything you do to a car is illegal, tint, lowering, clears etcs. Also, i shouldnt expect a cop to be a dick just cause i have tint on my window. Lastly, he also wrote me up for my tire being bald, yeah i was in the process of replacing them cause the inside were worn out, but come on, that was petty and just wanted to get in that little extra. AND for the record, i respect everyone.
