Yea that is amazingly stupid. I don't want to get into a big discussion, but fish are animals. You catch them, throw them back, their lips heal and they go on living their lives. I personally don't care if they feel pain. They're animals, we're humans. We have rule of the land, not fish. What have live fish done for YOU lately? Some people boggle my mind with their stupidity... PETA... pshhh...

i don't know guys i could see fishing if you are going to eat it. i guess catching isn't that bad but when kids just let the fish bounce on the line and the ropes gets cut through them or they don't put it back in the water or just do something stupid to the fish is plain stupid.

dude, the anatomy of almost every fish is about the same. Buy anyway, what will it accomplish if we tell everyone that fish are gonna feel pain. Its not like we are going to stop every angler so maybe they should try to solve more important things in life

I'm surprized the anglers are taking the approach that fish don't feel pain. They should just admit it, yeah the fish feel pain but we don't care. Of course they feel pain. Do they really think they like being yanked out of the water and sufficated while the hook is removed? What about when the hook goes through their eye? Fishing is obviously harmful to fish. They should just admit it. The enjoyment they get out of fishing is worth the pain the fish suffers. I'd guess that if that had to hook themselves and plunge underwater for each fish they catch, they might not enjoy it too much.

I think it is fine as long as you try to minimize the fish's discomfort and better if you are eating what you catch. How do you guys kill the fish you catch that you are going to eat? We'd bash their head into a rock and clean them, but I've head of others letting them sufficate or cleaning them live.

I think these fisherman should take just one extra step, and crush up some advil into their bait. That way it will help sooth any pain the fish might feel. You know, better yet, just use valium as bait, the fish will be glad to get hooked. Idea

do tubers feel pain? why do fish flop around and seem to gasp for water when they are in the air? i could see a tuber flopping around if they tried to get on a wakeboard, therefor, tubers cannot feel pain!

Of course fish feel pain. They have to have some sort of nervous system. but it's not like they have the capacity to suffer from it. What a bunch of hippie PETA crap.

But I do occasionally go tubing when it's choppy or too busy. Yes, it is extremely painfull to cartwheel across the water going 40-50mph on a turn.

I like the idea of crushing up advil and putting it in fish bait.

Don't be retarded, of course they suffer. It is just a matter of how much you care that they suffer. They may feel pain more intensely than you do, measuring pain is not easy. I've seen people cry over what I thought was nothing and not flinch with broken bones. If you are going to subject animals to pain for your enjoyment, at least have the balls to admit to it.

If you looked at that article and read it and analized it, you'd realize that it's completely idiotic to say Let's get rid of those fishermen once and for all, and also say fishermen are worst than tubers. They have as much right as we do to be on the lake and I know that any angler would be against this idiodic study, and I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoy fishing.
Why don't we all think and re-name this topic
Get rid of those damn scientists who have too much time on their hands to study fishes pain receptors instead of a cure to cancer or to cleanup the enviroment. Leave the fishermen alone and dismiss this bogus study!

I'm not so sure 'suffering' was the correct word. I guess it's pretty vague. What I was trying to say is that the fish don't suffer in the way we do when we feel pain. We remember the pain, associate it with a cause, and feel anxiety about it happening again - that's the suffering. I think with fish it's more of an instinct thing. Without a concept of self, there can be no suffering, sure there's pain that instinctively tells a fish that he's out of water or there's a big hook in his lip, but it's not like the fish is sitting there saying 'why oh why is this happeing to me'. Of course this is all debatable, I'm sure that the PETA people would say the opposite. But just think of the brain activity in fish - they have only a fraction. Whatever, it is a pointless debate.

Yes, that is a fairly ridiculous study, but I have to disagree with people who are saying we should just disregard animals and that PETA "is the scum of the earth".

Yes, humans are the most evolved and intelligent species, but the notion that we just can just plunder and do whatever we want with animals is not really healthy for humans, or the environment. You might disagree with PETA because you dont' like their tactices or because you don't want to feel guilty eating hamburgers, but their actual mission is quite worthwhile. I'd recommend doing some reading about what humans have done to kill out lots of species of animals, the effect it has, and how much environmental destruction occurs from the production of meat for consumption. It's rather sobering.

Don't get me wrong, I used to fish on occasion, and I'm not a vegetarian (although I rarely do eat meat). But, that doesn't mean I should just choose to ignore the health of animals and our planet, and call groups looking to protect animals as the scum of the earth.

I fish therefore I am. 50 mph is slow for a bass boat, try 70 for an average. There is great skill involved infishing. I have yet to do it, but I have almost hooked a couple of jet skiers (I didn't lead them enough). My cousin did mannage to hook a skier that coming way too close to his boat. Put the hook right in the tip of the ski and was able to basically faceplant him at 30 mph. Guy didn't even know what happen because the hook came out as the ski tumbled.

Now on to the fishing part. I practice catch and release, unless there is obvious too much damage to the fish and it will die anyway, then I will go ahead and kill it instead of throwing it back in. Fishing is a sport that requires a great deal of knowledge to be good at.

I'm going turkey hunting this weekend... I'm gonna kill me a turkey and clean it and eat it. Also, if it's a nice big adult turkey (a tom) i'm taking it to the taxidermist. After I get through hunting, I'm going to go fishing a catch tons of bass and release them. Then, I'm going to catch lots of crappie and keep the legal ones and then clean them and eat them with my turkey!! You hippies kill me. "Oh dude... don't kill the little helpless animals." If I'm gonna eat it, why not?! Animal rights activists crack me up SO much.

Open up your mind Dave, it might help. It's easy to label someone a hippie, without really thinking, or wanting to think about the consequences of human actions. Superiority is not necessarily a right to abuse and dominate something.

I have to weigh in here. PETA has done some good, but they do not think past the present.

If we all stopped hunting deer, let's say in the Gunnison Valley, CO, they'd quickly overpopulate and start starving.

We should remember that not ALL PETA is fanatics, but then most hunters and fishermen are ethical also.

I hunt and occasionally fish and I think PETA is for a good cause overall. It may just be in TX or the south or something but you wouldnt believe how many people can kick the crap out of a dog or torture a cat and not lose any sleep over it. I will admit PETA may go too far sometimes with their studies and trying to protect animals but someone needs to stand up for the animals because they obviously cant do it themselves.

Pat - Just wondering, but how am I "abusing" say... a deer when I shoot it? I mean, I only take clean, ethical shots that I know will hit where I want it to. Now, the poachers who get out and shoot at anything that moves while driving down the road, you could call abusers. I hate poachers. They obviously give us ethical hunters a horrible image.

How can you ask that question when you call people "retards" and tell people who don't agree with your views to "shut the hell up?"
