I just started trying to do a HS BS 180 and am fine with the jump and rotation and can land fine...but without the rope ...I am trying to pass the handle but can't seem to get it to my other hand. Any tips? Thx! |

you can go on a tramp, tie the rope off, and practice them there, or if you dont have access to a tramp, tie it to a tree or something and then just spin them on the ground.
or, if you have a vandall handle one that looks like this
-----|----| and that way you can wrap yourself in teh handle, and then just like unroll. |

DunDunDun, no tramp available but had tried tying the rope to a stable object and can spin them from the ground but on the water, can't get the handle to my other hand.
I have a premier V-handle and was considering trying it wrapped but have never done that before. So, coming in HS on regular stance, would wrap handle behind back and hold large handle with right hand and V part with left, jump & rotate, then let go of small part and land holding large handle....is that correct? I was just wondering what happens when you let go of V handle and how much slack it will create... |

| Do several bunny hop BS 180's. Once you get the feel for passing the handle, go do it wake to wake. |

| Give a solid tug with your front hand towards your hip, then don't let go until you got it in the other hand |

OK the elusive HS BS 180....
I still land most of mine with the quick handle pass at the end but when I'm on my game I can land them blind and stinky. I prefer blind and stinky cuz IMO it looks the best but I'm not always riding my best so I deal.
What I do and I'm fairly technically sound for an old guy.
Regular approach in fact I take a bit off my cut so I don't over shoot the second wake. big problem with me for almost anything BS.
Pop, wait, peak and then start to spin BS while leaning your upper body away from the boat.
If you wait for the peak to do this the handle should still be in nice and tight. Pushing the handle back at the wake helps spin you BS and also makes it easier to keep leaning over your toes. Keep your eyes open and looking to the shore line behind you, if you can see the boat when you land you will over spin and slide out on your heels. _________________ PEACE

| J_DOGG, thanks for the explanation - I see the HS BS 180 listed as your favorite trick, so I'll definitely take your advice. I seem to be able to pop, wait, spin and land but without being able to pass the handle. I think I let go before getting it to my other hand...will make that a goal to land next summer! |

just to add to the good pointers made above, take any agression out of your wake jump. The pop should be straight up without any speed. You have time to judge whether you are going to come down the second wake. i always look as i peak to make sure.
Jdogg have you tried shifty to blind off the double up? I have tried suicide to blind but whenever im up there i dont get the time! but then again weve only got a ski boat.
It is a technical trick and very rewarding. |

Why can't you get the handle?
If you let the handle go before it gets to the small of your back, you should hold the handle longer.
If you cannot get the handle across the small of your back, you need to build up strength in your arm, or use both hands to place the handle by your lead hip before reaching for it.
If your rear hand is not fast enough or doesn't have the dexterity, try some surface bs 180s. Try them cutting out toeside first, and when you have mastered that, try them out on your heelside edge. |

kuehn, NO, but I do take the HS BS 180 off axis on the d-up.. Some times on purpose sometimes not....LOL...
Disclaimer: I was landing HS BS 3's before I ever landed a HS BS 180....
I know people that had to turn a TS 5 into a TS 3 cuz they couldn't just do a TS 3.
Go with what works for you for the most part. _________________ PEACE

How I learned them:
1) out in the flats, 2) inside out, 3) when you launch your boat, dont immediately weight your boat - and try them wake to wake that way. Me and a buddy of mine could do a pretty good bit before either of us learned bs 180's, but the day we tried them with no weight in the boat, it was money. It's much easier to deal with a smaller wake when learning these.. Once you do a dozen behind a small wake, carrying it over to a real wake is cake.
Also - It depends on the person - i land blind regular and pass it switch,
so mess around with wrapped and passing the handle, and do whatever feels most comfy first (although i suggest learning both). _________________ http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=16993 one of few trips i got to make to the lake this year |
