Ok, so I thought of something awhile ago, and I want to know if you think it would work:
First off, on the NYS thruway, most people are using an EZ pass, it's an RF device where you only have to drive by the scanner and it debits or charges your credit card instead of paying a toll then and there in cash.
So, instead of having Troopers pull people over and write tickets, why not automatically mark peoples entry and exit times on any toll road, and if they go the speed limit, charge them the usual toll. Then charge them extra for every 5 MPH over the limit.
You could have scanners at the rest stops to mark that time too, and small RF chips in the paper thruway tickets for people not using EZ Pass. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Is big brother watching again? Did the chip tell them whether you went #1 or #2 at the rest stop?

Are you an idiot? Or do you just enjoy getting charged for driving over the speed limit? _________________

cameraboy,
We've got a Toll Highway here with the electronic transponders, and otherwise it just photos your plates as you get on and off. It's fine with me (except the fact that our idiot government sold the thing) but nobody's forcing me to use it and I don't cause it's a bit pricey.
As for your second idea... photo radar has been a big controversy here (was installed for awhile, taken out by the new government in Ontario, threatened to be brought back... and never happened. A lot of people say, "if you drive the speed limit, what's the difference!?" And generally everyone else thinks it's a big cash grab, and they're correct of course. The gov tries to defend their position with 'safety' of course, but it still won't fly among the public.
Anyway, the bottom line is that if we had those things I would either be poor or without a license. |

The problem is that speed is being measured at a specific spot. anyone can not speed for 100yds if he know he is being watched. We also have booths that time you between booths to see you average speed and time. This doesnt measure your speed, only your average. Now these booths are not for giving tickets, they are for charging. Our airport is so big, that it is actually a shortcut to cut through the airport to get downtown, rather than take the traditional highways. So, if you make it between the booths too fast, then they know you are not airport traffic and charge you for use of airport roads. If you take longer, then they know you used the airport and do not charge you. _________________ TONA

jason_ssr, it's funny on the toll highway because it shows your enter exit time on your bill and where exactly you got on/off. A couple tickets you show people and they're like your went from x to y in 6 mins... holy $(&! |

they did that in IL already, they calculated the time it took to get from toll both A to toll both B. They sent out letters indicating that you had to have traveled at this speed because of the time stamps on the transponders, needless to say, a bunch of people returned them after those letters,
since that time, I have not really heard of people getting tagged for speeding unless they are traveling at a very high rate of speed in excess of 100mph plus. _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

IIRC, most of the tollwasy companies are private, not state.
If so, this would be illegal. Same for other camera photos for traffic infractions. _________________ I'm hung like Einstein,

| muckmeister, it would be crazy if they gave everyone who went say 110km/h (10 over the limit) a ticket. When I go on the 401 our major highway and get outside the top of the city, people are doing 120-130 in the slow lanes! |

most people around here fly too. almost every toll/highway is 55mph.
I would say if your not doing 65-70 your p1$$ing people off.
It's all revenue generating policies. Now they are putting cameras in at a bunch of intersections to catch people blowing red lights, which I am a fan of, people dont stop at red lights anymore, you might get a flash of their brights to warn you they are not stopping. _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

muckmeister, I'd be pissed off if I had to drive 55mph too!
And speaking of Rita... we just got a bunch of rain and some good wind... I'd hate to be in a Cat 3 even! |

My friend just told me this past week that when he was little they did this in Pennsylvania. They would know whether you sped to the other side of the turnpike based on the time it took to get there. So they would speed, then stop for breakfast on the way to waste time. _________________ Steal My Book

| The only tollway I'm familiar with is Beltway 8 in Houston. I think the posted speed limit is 65, but if you're not doing at least 75 you're about to cause an accident. The flow of traffic is 75-85 mph and heavy. |

J-Ro,
I'm not sure if they do that anymore, But the PA Turnpike is a 65MPH $hit road until you you get out in the middle of nowhere, then it opens to 3 and 4 smooth lanes in each direction for about 50 miles and they drop it to 55MPH. And I learned the hard way. What I thought was 4-5 over was actually 14-15 and NO WAY of getting out of it.
IMO the PA turnpike is a joke. 330+ miles, 22 exits all evenly spread apart. If you breakdown in between exits even with the call boxes it would suck. _________________

I can't drive 55! -Sammy Hagar
Anyone who actually goes the speedlimit has something to hide (no greencard, high, drunk, roadhead,...) IMO, so they drive the speedlimit to avoid being pulled over. This, in fact, makes them look more suspicious.
Then there are the people who are just overly cautious. |

Then there are people like me. Sometimes, I'm just not in a hurry. Like the 7 hour drive home for Christmas break. I'm going to be around my family for a month. I get tired of them after 4 days, so why not drive 65 in a 70? |

I know at least 5 guys that drive the speed limit Bowen. Within 3 miles of it anyway.
And you're right. We don't want to be pulled over. Especially with kids in the car and the added inconvenience of the 20 minute ticket.
I think anyone caught speeding with kids less than 10 years old in the car ought to be charged with reckless endangerment in addition to speeding.
What used to piss me off was the "Baby on Board" signs while 20 over the limit or blowing red lights. _________________ I'm hung like Einstein,

But by that logic, shouldn't ANYONE be charged with reckless endangerment in addition to speeding? I mean, there are kids less than 10 years old in the other cars around them, right?
And why the age 10? What happens to a kid at 11 that makes them not "reckless endangerment" worthy? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Just a good break point. And no, not all speeders have others around them.
