| I'm kind of curious as to who on this board takes adderall for school or work purposes. Although I am not ADD, actually pretty far from it, I find that when I take adderall to study, I recieve a drastic increase in IQ level. I know that that statement makes no sense but my retention ability is staggering no matter what the material and I feel like I can literally cure cancer. I despise the side effects which for me is mild depression, terrible breath, and a really bad case of diahrea but I feel like it has gotten me through college with the schedule I take. I'm in a 3+4 dual admission medical program and the work load is pretty vigorous. I really would like to get a perscription for adderall and I even tell my parents I take it, but it is so hard because of people who use it recreationally for the speed like side effects. It almost seems funny to me at times that the people who you get it from are the people who do no work. None of my bio major friends or myself are perscribed it and when test time comes, it is a frenzy for the first people to get their hands on some. I just can't wait till this week is over so I don't have to take this crap for a while. |

that seems to me like the definition of drug abuse. Though I am not condeming you, I've thought of using that for the exact same reason. What I would be concerned with is dependency, the same with any other drug abused. What are the long term effects of this? ie. will you be able to concentrate and retain info years down the road when you have stopped taking it? _________________

| I take it on such an infrequent basis that I'm not overly concerned with the long term effects, although they do cross my mind. I had not taken it since early August when I was studying for my MCAT. I also have a very unadictive personality from what I've found. Believe me, it is not something I enjoy taking, but it when you have three midterms in two days in the three hardest science classes at school that can highly effect your admission to medical school, you are left with no option. I actually find that when taking a test on adderall, i do much worse. I did a semi-experiment in Organic Chem last year for my last test. I had the highest average going into the test and i wanted to see if i would even improve my score if i took it with adderall, and i did significantly worse, but still ended luckily on top of the curve. It seems like this is how college is heading. Classes are getting harder, competition is getting greater, and it always seems that there is always another kid willing to study harder than you. I thank god every day that i applied to medical school out of high school and got in because if I had to even deal with more competition, i think i would be bald by 21. For my program incase you were wondering, the contract requires a 3.5 science GPA and a 24 on your MCAT to guarantee your seat so it still is not a cake walk. I was just seeing if this was as big at other schools as it was mine? |

| I take it a few times a year when I have several tests hitting at the same time of finals. I only take it when I feel I have to because I hate the way I feel when I come off of it. Also, I have to take it at like 5 in the morning if I plan on sleeping before midnight. |

What ever happened to the good old days of "study high get high grades"? Besides, you are cheating yourselves on tests. I find it, that if you dont study at all, and just go off what you have retained, one can do much better. Clutter f*cking your head is not the answer. _________________

well, ideally yes. LEARNING the material is what you pay for, however, we are busy and lazy. Therefore, we memorize the material before a test to score well, get good grades and get the hell out of there.
You still have to study, however, to learn the stuff. _________________

I'm a prettystraight laced individual (no drugs...ever, and mild drinking). I have to say that I have definitely considered taking it. And actually broke down and tried to find some last year because I had that much stuff going on, papers and tests, two weeks before exams, and I had procrastinated as much as I could. When it comes down to it though, I am worried about drug tests. I like to keep my oportunities open, and in the last few years I've had 4 different internships, 3 of which I've needed drug tests for.
I've heard that adderall can mess up your drug tests, its fine if you have a prescription, but if you don't you're SOL.
So far this year, I've been kicking my own ass and focusing in all of my classes (makes my long days go by MUCH faster). This week I have my first 2 midterms, so hopefully all goes well. |
