|
|
I've always been curious but I've never asked and I'm not complaining but why are the sporting goods MSRP the same in Canada as they are in the states.
For example I'm buying some equipment from Mountain Equipment Co-Op (Canada) and the prices are exactly the same as REI Co-Op. I save the difference of the exchange rate.
Just another reason I love Canada.

I've always wondered this. When the exchage rate is 60% I save $400 on a $1,000 worth of equipment.
Are boats any cheaper up there?

Oh but visiting the place if you like the outdoors is epic. The amount of activities and untouched wilderness is unsurpassed. The national parks make the US look awful by comparison. That and you can actually do dangerous things up north. The effing lawyers and whiney tit citizens haven't made personal injury lawsuits the national past time. You eff up and need rescued they charge your ass. You fly off a cliff on the slopes and die--tough shite. They don't mark hazards for hazardous sports. Kind of what the US was when I was a kid.
The entire Western half of the country is like a huge Disneyland. Actually if I could retire one of my houses would be in Whistler.

lcap the exchange rate is around .85 cents now to a dollar. 1 U.S. dollar is only worth 1.18 cdn now on the inverse. Your economy is sucking compared to ours these days. As for the Mountain Equipment MSRP, they're a cdn company are they not? They're just getting extra money from you guys if they charge the same I guess.
I bought an X-2 last year for 5-6 thousand less then you guy were paying.

lcap, boats are actually pretty expensive here... and wake boats are not easy to find at all near me.

You'd probably love BC if you headed up north. Plenty of pot available for you to kill whatever brain cells you've got left.

Bambamski,
That's the deal they are charging the same MSRP without charging the difference in the exchange rate. I was ordering some Metolius rock climbing equipment. $195 Canadian (MEC) and $195 American (REI.) Found out on the checkout that it only ships to Canadian Addresses. Guess I'm gonna plan a trip to Hongcouver soon.
I also want a new Kayak and the price thing is the same. With the money I save I can pick up a few cases of Kokanee, pay for gas, purchase 3 (5 day) all mountain passes at Whistler and part of the condo rental.
Some day maybe you guy's can point me in the right direction of the best skiing in the Canadian Okanogon. There is a resort we looked into that is located at the middle of the mountain. Has an outdoor ice skating rink, night time tubing, champagn powder and all the hotels are funky colors. Wish I could remember the name. Looked like a great family place.

Don't they get you at the border though, ask you, "Did you buy anything over $250 US?" They might be a little suspicious when you've got a brand new kayak strapped to your roof...
I dunno, the last time I crossed the border was a good 6-8 years ago though, times have changed.

I think Panarama has something like that as well lcap. It's owned by the same company that owns Whistler I believe.
Things used to be much cheaper down there but times have changed. I find most clothes, eating out, ect to be the same price which costs me more if I buy them down there. It will still cost you less if you buy things up here lcap, but with the our dollar getting stronger you don't get as much bang for you buck.
lcap some of the best skiing is in the crowsnest past in BC. Place called Fernie, it's a bit of a hike for you but worth it if you stay for 3-4 days. However with Whistler on your door step I would find it hard not to head there every time you came to BC. Fernie just received 2 feet of snow on the weekend though. There season may start really early!

Junkee, sounds like you're particular about your sticks like me, eh?
I hate when they discontinue certain ones... I usually buy mine in batches of 6 or 12. The guys at the store always look at me funny when I ask for that many though.
Oh, and one dude tried to feed me a line on how there's barely any markup on sticks... don't believe ANYTHING those guys say!
I absolutely love calling those guys out when they feed me their bs on hockey equipment.
</highjack>
Okay... back to MSRP in Canada.
We have milk in bags y'know!

ontrider, yes i am particular. and its not that they've discontinued the blade. its just that for some reason they will not issue/distribute it to the US. I have since had to go to a full wood stick with the modano curve.

| I'm still using all wood. I can't justify $200 on a freaking stick. Especially when I KNOW it will be broken.

Lcap... the resort you are thinking of is Silver Star, in Vernon. It is only 20 min above the city that is surrounded by 3 lakes. Very nice spot, not the gnarliest skiing but big skiable area 2800 acres +lots of consistent dry snow and hardly any rain. Similar to skiing the more rounded mtns like deer park and vail.

ogopogo,
http://www.skisilverstar.com/highband.html
You are correct Silverstar is the place we were going to as a family last winter. The place looks awesome. Love the archictecure, tubing hill, ice skating and most importantly the quality of the snow.
I don't have a map but I thought I could bail out for a day and hit Red Mountain. Is that possible?
Is Fernie also in that same neighborhood? So many choices, so little time.
For the Canadians: What is your favorite ski/ride resort area? Is it really Whistler?

I've noticed that nobody's manufactured a Kovalchuk blade yet?

shannahan curve? bleh!
im not sure why they havent given kovalchuk a blade. maybe if christian was still around you could just buy one of those, heat it and bend it to make it look like a U-turn. then you could just take a sharpie and write his name on it. and brag to your friends. "limited edition"

I can see where you formed that opinion but it couldn't be further from the truth. Preserving as much of our gift as possible is of paramount importance to me. Being a good steward is everyone's responsibility. I take this very seriously and I teach it to my kids.
I do have heartburn when areas that have certain zoning (without any critical habitat) are reclassified in the name of the environment without any evidence to support the reclassification.

just go to any crappy sporting goods store and buy one of those plastic screw in blades. Then you can curve it as much as you want.

Hockeyplayer, we had those in grade school and got in trouble for curving them! One time I got all exciting after netting a hat-trick - top corner! - but my goal didn't actually count. The teacher gave me a penalty, two minutes for raising the puck.

High School was better. Better quality equipment. And one kid got checked into the pullout bleachers and seperated his shoulder.
The worst injury for sure was always in street hockey. The classic 'Orange ball to the nuts'. (or in Canada - 'the frozen, rock solid, wrapped in a layer of ice orange ball to the nuts')
One of my friends was actually crying after one of these... he was 17!

No.
It is about a 4 hr drive from the Okanagan Valley. Where are you driving from in WA? Red is very close to the border and only about 2 hrs from spokane.
Big White, Apex and Sunpeaks are all very close to Silver Star though.
I lived in Whistler for 2 yrs, it does kick ass in a way that no other resort in BC can compare too when you add everything up, but, Kicking horse, Whitewater and Red are comparable in their own ways. It depends what you are looking for? They do not have a good family scene except for Red.

ogopogo,
My trip would start in Wenatchee Washington......Kelowna is only a few hours from there.
We like powder--nice light, fluffy white powder with perfect crystals and sunshine. Oh yeah and no lift lines.
