BigRed,
Fixed it just for you but I hate that "edit" count thing on my posts. It reminds me of Swass.

The way it works is that you are attached to a board...seatbelted onto the seat and your feet are secured into the foot binding like thingys (technical terms). If you come of the seat or your feet come out of the bindings it can get real ugly. You don't want to know what would happen then...usually requires hundreds of stitches and many days at the hospital, if you make it that far.....anyway .... the board is designed to float you upright in the ready position after any crash so again, as long as you stay in/on the board you can't drown.
A hydrofoil is attached to the bottom of the ski, there are a few different ones out there (airchair, skyski, foiltech, ...my brother is redesigning one as well) there are wings attached to the hydrofoil...just like an airplane they are designed to fly...once you get the balance thing figured out....you can literally ski 8+ hours a day. If you are flying (board above the water) there is literally no resistance. My nephew (6 years old) received Hydrofoiler of the year for < 14 years old. An 80 year-old lady hydrofoils from LA to Catalina and back every year....don't know how far that is but it would take a few minutes I guess.
Basically everything on a hydrofoil is directly opposite of skiing or wakeboarding. If you use your legs, you will face-plant and without being able to protect yourself, remember you're strapped in, it's going to sting. But after you take your legs out of the picture, you lean forward to bring the board down and lean back to make it come up and out of the water.
For us old guys that use to dive from diving boards....it is the next best thing to it as you can get 15-25 ft high.
Hopefully that helps.
