Now I'm no Ryan Sheckler hater, but the dude is way overrated. I saw him skate the Tampa Pro and he fell twice in his qualifying run and still made the top 10. Then today I watched the X-Games and Nyjah Houston had a flawless run and Sheckler beat him even though he landed sketchy on his hardest trick (Nyjah landed an equally difficult trick perfectly).
Last night I watched the vert comp and Andy MacDonald was getting robbed pretty bad. He had multiple flawless runs and couldn't get a score out of the 70's even though he was one of three guys throwing a 720 (the other two got gold & silver, Andy didn't place).
I know winning the X-Games is meaningless in terms of evaluating actual talent, but it seems like they're judging more based on the current popularity of a skater rather than their actual skill. There's no point in guys like Andy competing any more, he's not the cool thing anymore so he's gonna get judged down next to guys like Shaun White. I like seeing these guys skate, but I hate seeing them win just 'cuz all the 14 year old girls scream loudest for them. |

Annnnnnd that's why I don't watch the x-games. I'm glad it puts these sports out there and shows people what's capable and how insane the progression has been in the last 5 years (sort of) but it does it in entirely the wrong light IMO. |

Apparently the X-games must have been designed for untrained eyes like mine...and the 14 yr. old girls
I was actually is disbelief White finished 2nd, not 1st. I thought he laid down his absolute best run of huge, visually impressive tricks, but PLG put in 2 runs that blew his scores out of the water. From my perspective (someone who never advanced beyond a decent ollie on a skateboard), White's run seemed leaps and bounds better than PLG's. The announcers went on and on about the one set-up wall White needed and how that cost him, but PLG had 4 or 5 set-up walls and no one cares. Clearly, his tricks must have been way more technically sound, but I sure didn't see it. Amplitude and entertainment value has to factor in somewhere. I'd rather see White and Dios go for broke than Bucky doing his same run from 4 years ago.
It's cool seeing Andy still out there killing it, but doing all his tricks 3 ft. off the coping does absolutely nothing for me. _________________ "I'm scared if I stop drinking all at once, the cumulative hangover will literally kill me." |
